Ducks Unlimited, Inc. (DU) is looking for a dynamic conservationist to fill the roll of Chief Conservation Officer (CCO) to lead an accomplished team of professionals.  Candidates must be recognized as national/international leaders in conservation who have served in significant leadership roles within DU, other major non-governmental conservation organizations, or a state/federal conservation agency.  This person will serve as a member of DU’s senior executive team while being primarily responsible for all operations within DU’s national and international conservation programs. 

Primary Responsibilities

The CCO’s responsibilities include all policy, science, and habitat conservation operations for DU’s national and international conservation programs.  This includes four U.S. regional conservation offices and operations in the U.S., Government Affairs Office in Washington, DC, and coordination with leadership in Ducks Unlimited Canada and Ducks Unlimited de México   Responsibilities are for strategic planning, plan implementations, conservation facilities, significant capital items, and programs to protect, restore, and manage lands.  The position is the primary liaison with the volunteer Conservation Programs Committee and oversees operations on land acquisition and disposal including the Land Review Committee.  This position works directly with DU Canada on conservation and fund raising matters.  The CCO reviews a wide range of other aspects of DU strategic and operational planning and execution at the request of the CEO.  The CCO serves as the primary conservation spokesperson for DU and is expected to serve on numerous national boards, councils, and other groups that affect DU’s mission.   The position relates directly to numerous state and federal agencies and NGO’s associated with conservation. 

 

Substantial fund raising from both public and private sources includes funds for U.S., Mexican, Canadian, and Latin American operations.  Budget responsibilities are for a multi-million dollar program of operations and includes revenue generation through major gifts and other public and private sources.

Qualifications                 

Substantial experience (15+ years) and advanced training (M.S. / equivalent or greater) in a particular area of conservation. Candidates should have demonstrated organizational and leadership skills, be excellent at oral and written communication, be willing to empower and motivate staff and volunteers, have demonstrated collaborative, decision-making capabilities, and be ready to work with a broad diversity of partners.  Candidates must have knowledge of wetlands and waterfowl conservation.  Extensive travel is required.
