The U.S. Green Building Council is currently seeking a Chapter Development Specialist who will work to increase the chapter network’s capacity to be self-supportive, represent the face of USGBC to communities across the nation, and strengthen the effectiveness of USGBC chapters.  This individual oversees and manages the USGBC chapter grant program and acts as a nonprofit subject matter expert to chapter leaders. The USGBC chapter grant program provides funding to USGBC chapters in need of financial support to implement innovative projects and programs and to build capacity within their organization.  In this capacity, the specialist is responsible for every aspect of the grants program including, but not limited to: developing grant criteria, evaluating submissions, managing the submission review process, and coaching grant recipients.

The Chapter Development Specialist will also serve as a high-level nonprofit coach in the area of fund development, volunteer management, and program measurement and evaluation.  This person will build and maintain strong relationships with USGBC committee leaders, chapter leaders and staff and fosters strong communication between volunteers, chapter staff and USGBC staff.  Working with the Chapter Department’s management team, this individual will also participate in the systematic outreach and coaching efforts to monitor and move chapters forward organizationally and developmentally.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Determine criteria for a variety of grants within the USGBC Chapters grants program
  • Evaluate grant submissions
  • Liaise with current and prospective grantees
  • Work with chapter boards and staff to monitor goal setting, progress and measure success for USGBC-funded programs.
  • Conduct in-person and remote trainings for groups of up to 150 leaders on topics related to fund development, hiring and managing staff, executive/board relations, and volunteer management.
  • Other duties as assigned by management

Qualifications/Skills:

  • 3-5  years  experience working in development for non-profit organizations
  • Minimum BA or BS in a related field (e.g., nonprofit management, public or business administration, etc.)
  • Experience delivering group trainings in person and via web
  • Excellent networking, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Grassroots outreach and campaign planning a plus
  • Experience managing volunteers a plus
  • Proven experience in program measurement and evaluation
  • Excellent project management, organizational, and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to manage and set priorities; adhere to timelines
  • Ability to handle a broad range of stakeholders with grace and diplomacy
  • Creative self-starter
  • Works well and thrives in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
