Description

Job Title: Chapter Conservation Program Manager (Beyond Coal Campaign)

Chapter: Michigan Chapter

Reports To: Chapter Director

Context: Oversees, plans, and implements the strategies and activities of the Michigan Beyond Coal campaign in coordination with the national Beyond Coal campaign and partner organizations.

Scope: The Michigan Chapter Beyond Coal Campaign Manager is responsible for overseeing the planning, coordination and implementation of the Michigan Chapter’s Beyond Coal to Clean Energy strategies and activities in Michigan. Develops strategies, implements state level work plans, communicates priorities and benchmarks, provides leadership, promotes participation, coordinates with partner organizations, and reports on campaign effectiveness. Collaborates with and coordinates the campaign’s activities among Michigan Chapter volunteers and staff, national Beyond Coal campaign staff and volunteers, and other appropriate staff. Represents the Sierra Club to government officials, the media, business and community leaders, allies and other organizations, and the public.

Campaign: The Beyond Coal campaign is a nationwide grassroots effort to eliminate coal's contribution to global warming no later than 2030 and replace the existing coal infrastructure with a clean energy economy fueled by wind, solar, and geothermal. The Beyond Coal campaign is working to stop the construction of new coal-fired power plants, retire and replace the existing fleet of coal plants, and keep the U.S. coal reserves underground and out of world markets. Job Activities:

1. Plans and carries out activities for the Michigan Beyond Coal campaign. Participates in the development of a strategic campaign plan, goals, and objectives for Michigan. Implements the state level aspects of a strategic campaign. On behalf of the Chapter collaborates with Sierra Club’s Environmental Law Program, Communications Department, Organizing and On-Line Organizing Capacities, Political Team, Sierra Student Coalition, Environmental Justice, Labor, Partnerships, additional Sierra Club’s programs and volunteer leadership to ensure the execution of a state-based campaign to move the Michigan’s electric generators off coal and expand renewable energy and energy efficiency.

2. Provides professional expertise to guide the campaign in Michigan and support volunteers and staff in the campaign. Facilitates volunteer leadership and staff coordination and information sharing for planning and execution of the campaign. Provides for training and motivates volunteers and staff regarding the issues and campaign design and execution.

3. Makes presentations to community, political, and governmental bodies regarding chapter conservation efforts. Assures campaign communications keep the Club membership and the general public informed.  

4. Oversees coordination with Beyond Coal campaign partners through coordinated planning, joint strategies for litigation, advocacy, communications and organizing efforts. Cultivates and maintains additional alliances with environmental, labor, faith, conservation and other partners in the Michigan Beyond Coal to Clean Energy arena. 

5. Advocates the Sierra Club policy position to government officials and agencies, business leaders, and non-profit organizations.

6. Works closely with all capacities and partners to ensure that the campaign strategy and messaging is effectively and accurately delivered through media outreach and communications activities. Acts as spokesperson for the campaign.

7. Works to foster and generate new and creative strategies, tactics and ideas within the campaign.

8. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned. Reports on progress toward established goals and effectiveness of the campaign tactics and strategies.

Knowledge & Skills:

-- BA/BS degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science, or a closely related field.

-- At least 3 years experience in the environmental field that includes research and organizing campaigns, press relations, and public speaking.

-- Expert knowledge of energy solution issues. Knowledge of renewable energy industry and economics.

-- Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.

-- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with volunteers.

-- Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.
