Description

Chair, 10:10 board of directors

Location: Camden, London
Salary: Voluntary / Unpaid except for expenses
Deadline: Monday 24 September 2012
Interviews: Tuesday 2 October 2012, morning
Next board meeting: Thursday 18 October 2012, afternoon

Halfway down a quiet alleyway in Camden, there’s a little building with bikes locked three deep on the railings.

The people inside are running an experiment that they think might help get climate change sorted. That’s us – 10:10. We don’t have any secret formulas or silver bullets, but we do have a 100,000-strong community of people, schools, hospitals, shops, football clubs, medieval reenactment societies and everything in between, doing bold, brilliant stuff to cut carbon.

So we dream up projectsbuild tools and spread success stories to make sure these amazing people have the help and inspiration they need to keep going further. Then we use these successes to push those in power for better policies, so that doing the right thing is never harder than it needs to be.

About the role

We are looking for a skilled and committed individual to join our organisation as Chair of the board. You will lead 10:10 in providing effective governance, support for our Executive Director, and help with our future planning and business development.

Specifically, we are looking for someone willing to devote time, enthusiasm and effort to the duties and responsibilities of being a Chair. This person will have an understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of the Chair, and a good understanding and respect for the distinction between governance and management. They will also be committed to the ethos and values of the organisation, be able to provide good independent judgement, and be willing to speak their mind. Leadership, communication and interpersonal skills are a must. An understanding of the issues affecting the climate change movement would also be desirable.

More about 10:10

10:10 was born in 2009, when the team behind climate change blockbuster The Age of Stupid realised they needed a good answer to the question they kept getting from audiences: ‘But what can I do about this?’.

They saw an appetite for something positive and practical that normal people could do without having to buy into the whole eco-warrior identity. People wanted to feel like they were part of a society-wide carbon-cutting effort, backed up with decent support and incentives from the government.

The answer was simple: unite the whole of society around one simple goal – cut our carbon by 10% in one year – and use the power of those commitments to push the politicians towards more ambitious carbon-cutting policies.

10:10 launched on 1 September, and thousands of people and organisations joined in the first few hours. From housing estates to high streets, from the classroom to the cabinet room, the idea spread like wildfire.

That first year saw some real carbon-cutting heroics: councils overhauled their travel policies, businesses invested in super-efficient heating systems, parents got their kids switching lights off by giving them a share of the bill savings,

British embassies around the world hit 40, 50 and even 60% by making smart use of video conferencing. Even the government got involved, saving £13m of public money on their energy bills.

By the start of 2011, the 10:10 community topped 100,000 people in 128 countries around the world. Some got to work on another 10% cut, some got involved in ourLighter Later campaignfor longer, lower-carbon evenings, while others helped their local schools raise money for solar panels.

And now, with fresh campaigns in the pipeline, a groundbreaking new website on the way and a community that’s going from strength to strength, there’s never been a better time to get involved.
