ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 

Participate in the development and implementation of land management and monitoring projects at the Disney Wilderness Preserve (DWP) and other central Florida Programs with an emphasis on the invasive plant and ecological land management programs.  This includes the following functions:

  • Leads work teams and supervises staff and contractors
  • Furthers the Conservancy’s strategic goals
  • Develops and implements  preserve management plans
  • Maps, removes, and monitors non-native species
  • Acts as the Central Florida Herbicide Use Coordinator
  • Ensure maintenance of invasive species database and completion of herbicide use reports,
  • Participates as a fire crew member during prescribed burns and wildfires. Requires minimum TNC training and health standards for prescribed burning at the arduous level.  For Florida: annual 45 pound pack test result of 45 minutes or less.
  • Requires NWCG 310-1 training for Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2). This requires the regular use of ignition devices, fire control hand tools, and operation of engines or tractor/tanker equipment. 
  • Abililty to obtain Florida Certified Pesticide Applicator license within six (6) months of hire with category (21) for licensing of commercial applicators of herbicides in natural areas.
  • Participates as a lead for regional land management partnerships
  • Maintains tools and equipment
  • Operates heavy machinery
  • Conducts public outreach, including leading field trips and volunteer workdays
  • Assists with rare species and hydrological monitoring
  • Opens and closes preserve to the visiting public
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and safe driving record for use of TNC-owned vehicles
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and 1 year related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Knowledge of natural systems.
  • Experience in ecological land management principles.
  • Experience supervising staff.
  • Experience performing physical work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 1 – 2 years related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required for preserve management activities.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation
  • Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s)
  • Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results
  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers). 
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS and GPS units.
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means
  • Safe use of maintenance tools; including lawn mowers, power tools and construction tools

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

Work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions:

  • require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
  • present frequent possibility of injury
  • require long hours in isolated settings

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
