The Center for Green Schools Research Intern will provide valuable assistance to Center staff by collecting data about the effects of greener practices in schools, synthesizing existing research, and conducting surveys about health and budget impacts in LEED for Schools projects across the country. The internship will involve communication with partners in top research institutions and government agencies as well as the members of the Executive Committee of the Coalition for Green Schools.

After completing the semester, the intern will be able to:

  • Demonstrate experience in non-profit workplace and sector
  • Clearly express concepts of sustainability and green building advocacy
  • More fully understand the benefits of green building and operations practices
  • Demonstrate practical experience in structuring research results in a format and style that is accessible to a general audience
  • Synthesize project data, surveys and qualitative data into a cohesive picture of the green schools movement

Internship Details Include

Specific project duties of the Research Intern will include:

  • Organization and distillation of previous school district interview information and the completion of additional interviews with facilities staff at the country’s largest school districts
  • Design, implementation, and synthesis of an impact data survey of sustainability leaders in K12 districts, both from the Center for Green Schools network and beyond
  • Design, implementation, and synthesis of a national survey of the K12 Facilities Masters group
  • Research into the energy and water savings, projected and actual (as compared to regional average), of LEED certified schools across the country

Education & Trainings Requirements/Preferences

  • Current enrollment in, or recent graduation from undergraduate or graduate program of study
  • Major or specialization in the building sciences, organizational sustainability, business, nonprofit management, public health; or relevant experience preferred

Experience Requirements

  • Previous work experience in team/office setting preferred
  • Experience in business research methods strongly preferred
  • Experience with survey data management

Other Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication, organizational and computer skills (MS Office)
  • A strong interest in organizational sustainability
  • Commitment to USGBC’s mission
  • LEED Green Associate or LEED AP preferred
