Provide leadership, strategic guidance, overall technical direction and management for the center. Continue the development of technical capability to produce world-class, quality research, development and demonstration (RD&D) results. Represent the center at technical, industrial, stakeholder, political and international events.
Develop strategic direction and initiatives for the center. Provide leadership as part of a team to develop the strategic direction for the Renewable Fuels & Vehicle Systems Directorate. Lead and guide the management of research programs by fostering innovation and creativity, ensuring coordination of RD&D program direction and efforts, interacting with the Department of Energy (DOE) and other potential funding sources and achieving efficient and cost effective RD&D programs. Lead the activities of the center through communication, decision making and coordination of activities with other laboratory centers and offices. Manage staff activities, including hiring, coaching, counseling, motivating and promoting teamwork. Implement the laboratory's Affirmative Action Plan by establishing guidelines for recruiting and developing a diverse workforce. Oversee center's planning and budgeting process. Manage the center's environment, safety and health programs, policies and procedures to ensure compliance and maintain a safe work environment.
Previous management and budget administration experience required. Program strategy, development and implementation experience required. Degree in appropriate field may be required.
Extensive knowledge of the renewable energy industry, as appropriate, as well as regulations, principles, procedures and practices of relevant discipline(s). Solves variety of multi-dimensional problems in absence of guidelines or precedents.

Models and embeds NREL values. Keeps abreast of key issues affecting respective Center/Office industry discipline(s). Builds effective teams; creates strong morale and spirit; shares wins and successes. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and direct personnel with diverse skills, work styles and values, both directly and through subordinate management.
PhD in engineering or science or equivalent relevant education and experience. Minimum of 15 years of progressively complex technical assignments, with demonstrated management experience in a research and development environment. Technical experience and capability in hydrogen, fuel cell, or related systems. The scope includes production, delivery, storage, codes and standards, and safety of hydrogen fuel infrastructures and all technical aspects of hydrogen fuel cells. Technical expertise is needed in the disciplines of chemical/mechanical/electrical engineering, systems engineering, and systems analysis. Expertise in one or more of the major technical areas or working knowledge of all major technical areas under position's span of responsibility. Demonstrated success at effectively directing and managing RD&D programs and staff. Ability to lead a diverse NREL professional research staff. Strong interpersonal, communication, organization and presentation skills. Demonstrated budgeting and planning skills. Recognized publications and contributions to science and technology, representation in professional and technical organizations, and a positive national and international reputation.
