ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 
  • Serves as lead for the Cedar River Basin and works closely with Lower Cedar Project Director to integrate freshwater conservation with Lower Cedar Valley conservation efforts.
  • Develops key partnerships with public and private organizations, community leaders and other stakeholders to achieve collaborative solutions for ecologically relevant watershed management, including potential develop of payment for services programs (“water funds”).
  • Assists Philanthropy staff with securing private funds and writes and manages government grants to fund conservation work.
  • Builds strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field, with special emphasis on flow regimes and nutrient issues in agricultural landscapes.
  • Works with other Conservancy programs to support conservation efforts and key priorities in the Mississippi River Basin
  • Provides support for statewide freshwater initiatives and policy issues, as needed
 
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
 
  • Ability to motivate team members and partners, set goals and lead efforts, gain cooperation especially from those over whom you have no authority.
  • Work with Director of Conservation Programs to develop and implement multi-year conservation strategies and goals; accountable for their achievement.
  • Responsible for operating within budget guidelines to ensure sound financial performance and control costs.
  • Ensure that programs comply with TNC policies and procedures and external (donor/legal) requirements.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • BA/BS degree and 5 years’ experience in freshwater conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in partnership development (community leaders, landowners, other organizations, government agencies, scientists, etc.).
  • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including heavy workloads, and budget/finances under deadlines.
  • Experience negotiating complex agreements with diverse stakeholders
  • Experience or training regarding current trends in freshwater conservation science and practice; experience in applying this knowledge to define and achieve conservation priorities on the ground.
  • Experience communicating with the public and diverse groups, giving presentations and delivering clear and compelling messages. 
  • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans.
  • Knowledge of aquatic ecology, conservation biology, hydrology, and hydro-geomorphology
  • Knowledge and experience of current trends and practices in freshwater/environmental flows, sediment/nutrient issues and agricultural best management practices.
  • Ability to achieve practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for targeted conservation purposes
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse partners, policy makers, and stakeholders to achieve conservation outcomes at both the project and statewide levels
  • Ability to work effectively as part of  dynamic conservation team, and to effectively manage project staff, budgets, and contractors for successful conservation outcomes
  • Successful experience in grant writing.
  • Excellent computer skills.  Demonstrated experience in MS Office, Word, and Excel.

Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."
