Title: Cats Indoors! Program Officer
Supervisor: Vice President of Advocacy
Location: Washington, DC Metro Area

Application Deadline: December 7, 2012

Introduction:

American Bird Conservancy (ABC), an international bird conservation organization, whose mission is to conserve wild birds and their habitats throughout the Americas, seeks an energetic, highly organized, and detail-oriented individual with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to manage ABC’s nationally-recognized Cats Indoors! Program.  This is a full-time position with American Bird Conservancy (ABC).

The Cats Indoors! Program Officer will work to reduce the impact of feral and free-ranging cats on birds by educating and encouraging domestic cat owners to neuter, vaccinate, and limit their cats’ outdoor activities; and by advocating for the passage and enforcement of federal, state, and local ordinances providing for the control of free-roaming and feral cat populations. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with strong research and analytical skills, the ability to translate science into law and policy, and a history of developing successful partnerships and coalitions.

This position requires a good understanding of ABC’s mission, and requires enthusiasm and energy from someone desiring a career in conservation.  There is extensive contact with others within and outside the organization and partnership, in person, by telephone, and through e-mail and other correspondence.  The work requires initiative, flexibility, attention to detail, and an indefatigable spirit.  It is essential that the staff member in this position is able to prioritize tasks and work in a team environment.  The position reports to the Vice President of Advocacy.

Primary Duties:

  1. BS/BA degree, preferably in biological, conservation, political science or a related discipline.

  2. Two or more years of office experience in a government relations/policy environment or combination of relevant education and experience.

  3. Excellent writing, communication, and organizational skills.

  4. Proficiency with computers and software.

  5. Ability to work efficiently and accurately, while adhering to deadlines.

  6. Position is currently slated to be based in ABC’s Washington, DC office.

  7. Willingness to travel up to 30% of their time.

  8. Belief in and dedication to American Bird Conservancy’s conservation mission and to the goal of the cat program.

  9. Good social and organizational skills, high energy and enthusiasm, creative, and a tenacious spirit.
