 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 The Caribbean Coastal Scenarios Science Specialist serves as The Nature Conservancy’s Central Caribbean Program’s project manager for the Caribbean Coastal Scenarios Project (CSP). The CSP seeks to analyze and communicate the impacts of climate change on the watersheds and coastal ecosystems of the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Puerto Rico.  The CSP is a cooperative project undertaken between the Conservancy and Florida International University.  The ending date for this position is June 30th 2011 and is based in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.   The CSP Science Specialist works closely with conservation, science and communications staff in the Conservancy as well as public and private scientists, decision-makers and partner organizations in all three countries.  The CSP Science Specialist will work closely with key partner organizations through out the region in order to collect necessary data, undertake state-of-the-art scientific analysis and communicate results to key audiences on how to best use the results of the modeling work to best adapt to the effects of climate change for conservation and natural resource management.  Critically important is the ability to recommend realistic strategies to decision-makers on how to adapt to a climate changing world based on the results of the analysis.  This may include some or all of the following:

• Participate in the design and implementation of a communication strategy to disseminate information related to the impact of climate change on watershed and coastal systems in the Caribbean.
• Develop, in a participatory process, Caribbean Coastal Scenarios for countries participating in the project.
• Organize and regularly convene a core team of projects staff and/or partners to develop or update project activities.
• Prepare detailed Annual Work plan with a timetable and budget, tracking progress of project teams.
• Produce required reports to granting agency and fulfill any other reporting needs of the organization.
• Performs fieldwork, including ecosystem assessment and field monitoring to address conservation plans and strategies implementation.
• Produce and regularly update a master list of regional experts associated to climate change projects, their fields of interest and contacting information.
• Prepare maps, documents and publications resulting from project achievements as well as provide assistance to countries in the process of Caribbean Coastal Scenarios development.
 BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
 • Graduate degree in science-related field and 4 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience developing and implementing climate change and/or other robust scientific analyses and disseminating the results of those projects to both technical and general audiences.
• Experience communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English and Spanish.
• Experience utilizing GIS software and data to generate models and create maps.
• Experience coordinating complex projects and managing inter-disciplinary and inter-institutional teams with clear timeframes and budgets for producing deliverables.
• Experience conducting surveys, recording and managing data and writing project reports.
• Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite software, managing databases .
 ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
 REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
• Graduate degree in science-related field and 4 years experience, or the equivalent combination.
• Ability to collect, manipulates, analyze, and interpret scientific data and prepare reports of findings.
• Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results.
• Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers) and ability to use provided computer technology to enhance the quality of work.
• Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English and Spanish.

• Ability to coordinate multiple projects with several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing timeframes.
• Compiles and organizes scientific data with attention to detail.
• Analyzes situations, evaluates alternatives and implements solutions.
• Interprets guidelines, evaluates information and modifies processes to adapt to changing circumstances.

• May help develop work plans and project budgets.
• May negotiate and contract with vendors.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
• Ability to work cooperatively with a number of staff and external parties, sometimes under pressure, in order to complete project work and goals in a timely manner.
• Provide a variety of information to staff and others, contributing to conservation projects and assisting workflow throughout the organization.
• Work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people, including scientists, preserve staff and others, providing and obtaining needed information.
• Ability to write grants and researching proposals.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The Caribbean Coastal Scenarios Science Specialist may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
These conditions may:
• require physical exertion and/or muscular strain
• require long hours in isolated settings
