CWR's Shipping Efficiency Operation:

CWR launched Shipping Efficiency in 2010.  Since then, it has worked with RightShip to develop the GHG Emissions Rating (A to G) and make it publicly available at ShippingEfficiency.org.  The rating is now used as a policy by charterers moving a fifth of the world's shipped tonnage to more efficient ships annually, and by other shipping stakeholders including ports and banks.

The goal of the Shipping Efficiency Operation is to drive a 25% improvement in the fuel efficiency and carbon footprint of the global maritime bulk and tanker fleets (approximately 175 million tonnes) by 2025,from a 2010 baseline.

The Operation currently includes three related work streams:

  • ·       Information: Increasing the availability and utility of fuel efficiency information per individual ship
  • ·       Demand: Increasing demand for more fuel-efficient vessels by creating and spotlighting various market signals and decreasing demand for less fuel-efficient vessels by exposing financial risks and embedding them in decision making
  • ·       Capital: Catalyzing efficiency retrofits by eliminating barriers to finance, increasing confidence in technologies through a robust measurement and monitoring methodology via carbon credits, and a demonstrative project.
  • ·       The GHG Emissions Rating (A to G) is THE global online platform providing stakeholders with the information they need to make informed decisions based on eco-efficiency.  A to G relative indexing drives market decisions; Retrofitted vessels are accurately reflected in A to G system
  • ·       50% of major charterers (3.9 billion tonnes of freight moved) use the A to G to support their chartering decisions; finance (banks), ports (20+) and ship owner communities use the A to G to support their investment decisions
  • ·       Energy efficiency commands a premium in the market place and directly correlates with higher asset value, higher charter rates and longer lifespan (needs comprehensive analysis)
  • ·       Of all cargo ships under 10 years old coming into drydock (approx. 1/5 of the global fleet of 10,000 vessels), 30% are retrofitted with fuel saving technologies paid by owner, charterer or 3rd party capex

By the end of 2018 the following outcomes, directly traceable to our efforts, will have occurred.
