Description

Join a dynamic team at the forefront of tackling climate change, working with one of the UK's fastest growing business sectors.

Confor is the UK representative body for the forestry and wood processing sector.

Governments across the UK have identified that tree planting can play a key role in tackling climate change, and the Scottish Government has additionally set a target to increase the use of wood. Planting trees, using more wood and managing more woodland both locks up carbon and can contribute to the UK’s Green Recovery from Covid-19.

This role is an opportunity for you to be a key player in a national team at the very forefront of the UK’s ambitions for climate change mitigation and securing a Green Recovery through supporting further growth in this low-carbon sector.

Carbon is increasingly driving government policy and, as the biggest driver of Climate Change, it has a high profile with the general public. Significant progress has been made towards reducing carbon in the atmosphere. However, achieving the UK Government’s ambition to be net zero by 2050 will mean tackling emissions that are hard to reduce as well as increasing carbon removal through technological and so called ‘nature based solutions’ like tree planting. As a wider range of measures are introduced, the risk of unintended negative consequences are likely to become higher.

We are seeking applicants with the capacity not only to help the sector capitalise on future opportunities but also to identify risks and potential negative consequences, thereby enabling the industry to better influence future policy and the mechanisms deployed to reduce emissions and lock up carbon.

Confor has a key role in working with the forestry and wood using sector to support the future growth of a low-carbon industry through the provision of advice and information, and by ensuring the sector is listened to and engaged with by governments and those active in shaping pathways to net zero.

Confor is seeking a self-starter, with a background and experience in working collaboratively on carbon matters, ideally in forestry and/or wood products. Knowledge of, and experience in, natural capital would also be welcome.

The successful candidate will be able to analyse complex documents and produce clear advice, have strong written and oral communication skills, and be able to build and maintain a network of contacts. In addition, it is important to be well organised, able to meet deadlines while juggling different tasks, be academically rigorous and able to work to a brief.
