The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado is the nation’s primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. NREL’s Chemical and Materials Science Center has an immediate opening for a full-time (40 hours per week) Researcher. The successful candidate will support chemical vapor deposition synthesis and characterization of graphene, as well as novel metal-decorated carbon materials for fuel cells.
The NREL fuel cells technology group performs focused research and development of new materials and technologies. The successful candidate will assist a dedicated staff to develop carbon-templated extended platinum surfaces and large area graphene. Specific work will include performing: chemical vapor deposition synthesis of carbon-based samples; analysis to characterize the electronic structure and dopant stoichiometry of graphene, microscopy studies to determine morphology, metal size distribution and dispersion on extended surfaces. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to provide input for reports, publish results in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and present their work at scientific conferences.
Relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Demonstrates complete understanding and wide application of scientific technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines.

Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
Important qualifications include: 
Demonstrated physical and chemical vapor synthesis capabilities with direct experience in the formation and characterization of nanostructured carbon materials. 

Previous work experience with various characterization techniques, e.g.: Raman and infrared spectroscopies, x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.
A PhD degree in mechanical engineering, or a related field, with expertise in chemical vapor deposition and vacuum processing.
