Description

Capacity Building Manager

Introduction

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) works to safeguard the world’s seafood supply by promoting the best environmental choice in seafood through the use of its logo. We celebrate, promote and add value to sustainable fisheries. Through the leadership of our partners, we help create market incentives to encourage other fisheries to improve the way they fish the oceans. Over 300 fisheries around the world, landing 12 % of the annual global harvest, are now engaged at some stage of the MSC’s independent assessment process. MSC certified and labelled seafood products are now available in around 100 countries.

Information on the role

The MSC has developed an international certification and ecolabelling programme designed to contribute to sustainability of global fisheries resources. The programme is designed to be accessible to all sustainably managed fisheries regardless of size, scale, location or type. The MSC works to develop tools and initiatives to enhance the accessibility of the programme to pre-MSC fisheries.

The Marine Stewardship Council is seeking candidates for a new position - Capacity Building Manager. The role of the Capacity Building Manager will be to implement the training and capacity building component of MSC engagement with pre-MSC fisheries.

Work will include developing content of guidance, tools and training programs that will be delivered to a range of stakeholders to increase accessibility for all pre-MSC fisheries.

It will also include managing the delivery of training and the application of other aspects of the MSC guidance tools so as to build capacity of stakeholders to engage with the MSC programme, especially in the small-scale and developing world sector.

The post holder will deliver training and capacity building personally, and evaluate the effectiveness of MSC’s capacity building program on an ongoing basis, with a view to ensuring continuous improvement.

This is an exciting new role and the job holder will make a real contribution to the MSC.

We are looking for candidates with the following:

  • Post-graduate degree or equivalent in fisheries or marine conservation biology, or fisheries, natural resources or environmental management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fisheries and resource sustainability issues, particularly as in relation to wild capture fisheries and the MSC’s Fisheries Standard
  • Experience of delivering fisheries management or scientific advice in a developing world context, including practical field experience.
  • The ability to exercise sound judgment and demonstrate initiative in accomplishing assigned tasks.
    • Demonstrated excellence of written and spoken communication skills in the English language, directed at a diverse range of people, organisations and settings.
    • Experience with and proven ability to work with diverse stakeholders and interest groups.

 Additional requirements

  • Ability to travel on a regular basis.
  • Must have a valid passport and be able to travel internationally.
  • Spoken or written proficiency in French or Spanish is highly desirable.
