The Environmental Justice Foundation (www.ejfoundation.org) is seeking a highly motivated, committed and experienced Campaigner to join our growing international team working to protect our global environment and defend human rights.

 JOB PURPOSE

The Campaigner will be working across all of EJF’s campaigns, with a leading remit on oceans conservation, ending illegal fishing and human trafficking in the seafood sector.  EJF investigates, exposes and campaigns to end the links between international demand and supply chains for ‘everyday’ goods such as cotton and seafood and environmental destruction and associated human rights abuses in the Global South and former Soviet Union.

The Campaigner will take a leading role in delivering EJF’s international policy work, leveraging change from high-level decision-makers to build Oceans governance and address the environmental and social impacts of illegal, unsustainable and inequitable fisheries, and from plastic pollution.

The role will require detailed research and analysis, including investigations in West Africa and Asia. The Campaigner will work with the Directors and EJF team to develop and deliver a winning strategy, including developing high-profile communications packages and videos.

Strong experience of high-level advocacy with national governments, the EU and international bodies, and with industry is desirable; excellent communication and presentational skills and the ability to convey complex messages clearly to a variety of audiences are essential. The Campaigner will produce compelling published written reports and policy briefings to the highest standard and accuracy.

The role presents a fantastic opportunity to work with EJF’s ambitious and dynamic Campaign and Communications team, and to be part of a highly successful and exciting growing global programme to protect people and planet.

Person specification:

Essential:

  • A minimum of 3 years campaign experience, ideally in the not-for-profit sector and in a related issue; experience in developing and implementing advocacy and campaign strategies.
  • Proven experience of lobbying governments, international organisations and business, with demonstrable impact for environmental security and human rights.
  • Proven expertise as a desk and field based researcher, preferably in a campaign context.
  • Extensive experience writing campaign reports, briefings, and a range of written materials for publication, aimed at a diverse range of audiences.
  • Proven experience of working successfully with the media to communicate campaign messages.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, working with a team and able to persuade audiences externally with superb communications skills.
  • Good project and budget management and reporting, including to funders.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally, including occasionally in high-risk environments.
  • Creative thinker able to innovate to accommodate changing needs and opportunities; strategic and analytical approach and able to develop winning campaign strategies; diplomatic and resilient, with a commitment to creating positive change.

Preferred skills/experience

  • Experience of remote-management and capacity-building of campaign partners and staff.
  • A foreign language (preferably French, German or Spanish)
  • Experienced photographer or videographer

Background:

EJF’s Mission is to Protect People and Planet.

EJF works to protect the environment, wildlife and natural habitats and defend the human rights of vulnerable people around the globe. We work with communities, governments and industry to document threats to environmental security and to promote sustainable, equitable solutions. Our work focuses on international supply chains for products including seafood and cotton, which have resulted in environmental degradation, poverty, and forced labour. Current campaigns and projects include protection for oceans, with a focus on West Africa and Asia; ending human trafficking in fisheries; securing support for climate refugees; and the eradication of toxic pesticides.

In the past 3 years, EJF’s work has expanded significantly – we now have offices in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, South Korea, Spain and Germany as well as the headquarters here in the UK. EJF is expanding the scale and scope of our campaigns and field projects and recruiting senior staff accordingly to join the communications and campaign teams.
