Description |
Global Witness is an international NGO that exposes the corrupt exploitation of natural resources and international trade systems, to drive campaigns that end impunity, resource-linked conflict, and human rights and environmental abuses. Our success is built through detailed on-the-ground investigations and uncompromising advocacy. We are currently reinforcing our global campaign to stop the destruction of the world’s tropical forests. We are looking for an experienced and highly-motivated campaigner to spearhead our efforts to end the destruction of forests in the Congo Basin and stop the EU importing illegally and unsustainably logged timber. The EU has sought to position itself as a global leader on efforts to tackle the illegal timber trade. At the same time, implementation of new EU timber import regulations is untested and the EU’s consumption is currently one of the main drivers of deforestation and forest degradation globally. The Congo Basin contains one of the world’s most significant areas of tropical forest. These forests are under threat, however, both because of weak governance in countries in the region and because of international demands for timber. The EU is currently attempting to establish a series of timber trade agreements with governments in the Congo Basin region. This campaigner position will involve field investigations in the Congo Basin countries, lobbying, media work and collaboration with civil society groups. Main advocacy targets will include European Commission institutions, EU member state governments, European timber trading and logging companies, government officials and companies in the Congo Basin. Applicants must have a demonstrable record of successful campaigning, capacity for investigative research, excellent writing skills and fluency in English and French. Direct experience of working in Congo Basin countries would be highly advantageous. To apply for this position, please send a CV and covering letter, neither of which should exceed two-pages, to recruitmentcampaigns@globalwitness.org.
