This is an exciting opportunity to join as a senior member of the Environmental Justice Foundation’s dynamic team. The campaigner will work across EJF’s Oceans and climate campaigns with a specific focus on human trafficking and other Human Rights abuses connected to the seafood industry (both wild-capture and aquaculture) and climate and conflict and water grabbing.  

You will work with the Directors, the Communications Coordinator and wider Oceans team to build the profile of these campaigns, raising public, corporate and political awareness of the environmental and social impacts of these industries.

This is a challenging role that demands proven relevant experience and skills to deliver on ambitious plans. You should have experience in managing complex research projects and the delivery of campaigns, with clear understanding and experience of research and campaigning including initiating, planning, implementing and evaluating campaigns. You must also be able to demonstrate excellent research, writing and communication skills. Alongside this you will have a proven track-record of the highest calibre of field-based research

The role will include but would not be limited to the following:

According to a clear programme of work, with specific milestones, outputs and targets, agreed with EJF’s Directors you will:

  • Identify key areas of research / investigative possibilities overseas and undertake research and investigations.
  • Develop, plan and implement an agreed strategy for policy engagement (with all stakeholders and specifically governmental and intergovernmental bodies, corporate entities and community based organisations) and outreach for the campaign.
  • Have responsibility for overseeing the production of campaign reports and briefings, public awareness documents (leaflets, web-pages, news updates), including undertaking specific research where needed and also cross-checking the validity and strength of draft reports produced by junior staff and interns you may be the line-manager for. You will be expected to sign-off on documents indicating that you are satisfied with the accuracy of the information. 
  • Ensure the campaign is showcased regularly and appropriately across social media such as Facebook and Twitter.
  • On occasion support the production of campaign videos within the campaign, which will include working with the Video Producer on the drafting of scripts and our ability to effectively broadcast the campaign films to a wide range of audiences.
  • Take photos and video to support the campaign in a variety of situations in the UK and overseas. Training in the use of EJF’s cameras can be provided as necessary. All images must be logged and entered into the EJF image database.  Please note all images (film or photos taken on any equipment, including personal equipment while travelling for EJF ) are strictly sole and exclusive copyright to EJF. You will be required to read, consider and sign a legally binding contract to this effect.
  • Provide detailed campaign updates, strategic and tactical analysis to the Directors and when necessary to the EJF team, and (in addition to the regular weekly updates), providing the directors with internal reports and clear, precise assessments of next steps and opportunities.
  • Work with the Communications Coordinator to optimise the public, corporate and other outreach of the campaign, thinking creatively to maximise the reach and effectiveness of the campaign message, including outreach to relevant industry players, chefs/restaurants, celebrities etc.
  • Assume responsibility for certain aspects of budgetary management for the campaign, specifically reporting on any expenditures, including providing projected costs for any overseas trip, together with receipts and invoices post-trip.
  • Ensure EJF’s contacts database is fully updated with all external contacts, specifically including media, policy makers, NGOs, and industry contacts for which you are the primary EJF contact. 
  • Provide support to media releases and serve as a spokesperson as needed, under the direction and prior agreement of the directors. In collaboration with the directors, you will be required to develop proactive engagement with a range of media outlets in order to optimise our media coverage.
  • Represent EJF and the campaign at public events (UK, overseas), presenting winning presentations in person and in writing to a diverse range of audiences and target groups. 
  • On occasion be asked to develop and assist with the production and submission of funding proposals to institutional funders and other sources of income. You will also be required to support the monitoring and evaluation of campaigns, and provide precise reporting to Directors in the required format and on schedule.
  • Maintain a detailed campaign agenda / calendar of outstanding tasks, outputs, targets and events.
  • Assist in any other tasks and duties as may be required.

A proven track record in the following is required:

  • Superb communication skills – ability to give winning presentations in writing, face to face and as a public speaker
  • A minimum of 4 years demonstrable campaigning experience in human rights/environment or a similar context
  • Proven experience as a desk and field based researcher
  • Experience as a skilled negotiator
  • Extensive experience of research and production of campaign reports and materials for publication 
  • Experience of field-based research
  • Experience of working with, and contacts within media
  • Ability to identify funders and produce winning proposals for support
  • High calibre project management and monitoring and evaluation skills.
  • A clear ability to establish priorities, meet multiple deadlines and work well under pressure. 
  • Ability to travel, often at short notice and routinely work evenings and weekends. 
  • Education to degree-level or similar

Preferred skills/experience

  • Foreign languages an asset
  • Experience of camera work (film and photography)
  • A higher (second) degree in a related discipline and preferably either journalism, media or a biological science.

 

Location: Based at EJF’s London office with travel (sometimes at short notice) to global destinations as relevant.

Renumeration: £35,000 - £40,000 according to experience. A pension scheme is being developed. Bike scheme offering £150 towards a purchase after 3 months.

Holiday: 20 days (rising by 2 days per year of service), plus all statutory holidays. Time off in lieu is not granted (there will be weekend work).
