Job Title: Campaign Representative, Our Wild America - Alaska

Department: Conservation, Our Wild America Campaign

Reports To: Senior Campaign Representative, Our Wild America 

Summary: Plans and implements the strategies and activities of the Our Wild America campaign to protect Alaska’s lands water and wildlife.

Scope: The Campaign Representative is responsible for the planning, implementing and securing financial resources for the Our Wild Alaska campaign. Collaborates with and coordinates the campaign’s activities with the state Chapter volunteers, partner organizations, national capacities and appropriate staffing resources. Under the direction of the Senior Campaign Representative, develops funding proposals, campaign strategies, priorities and benchmarks. The campaign representative implements such strategies by coordinating across capacity units such as organizing, legal, communications, federal policy, outings, and digital strategies. Position provides leadership, promotes participation, and reports on campaign effectiveness to assigned National staff. This representative will represent the Sierra Club to government officials, the media, business and community leaders, allies and other organizations, and the public.

The work in Alaska is focused on the keeping fossil fuel development out of the special places of America’s Arctic (Keeping Dirty Fuels in the Ground Initiative), securing permanent protections for special places in America’s Arctic, the Tongass and Chugach National Forests (Permanent Protections Initiative), and protecting valuable salmon resources and other watershed values in places like Bristol Bay (Protect Forests and Wildlife Initiative).

Job Activities:

  1. Plans and carries out the Our Wild America campaign in Alaska. Develops a strategic campaign plan, goals, and objectives for Our Wild Alaska.  Coordinates with Sierra Club’s Environmental Law Program, Chapter, Communications Department, Organizing Digital Strategies, Political Team, Sierra Student Coalition, Sierra Club’s programs including but not limited to Environmental Justice, Labor, Partnerships, and volunteer leadership to achieve desired outcomes of the Our Wild Alaska campaign.
  2. Achieves associated Our Wild Alaska campaign fundraising targets, including donor cultivation, and proposal writing.
  3. Develops and advances Sierra Club policy positions related to state and federal resource management plans and processes. Ensure the Sierra Club is regarded as a significant leader by the media, key decision makers and donors. Ensure that such policies are accurately advanced by volunteers and organizing, lobbying and legal staff in various decision making fora.
  4. Collaborates with Our Wild America Campaign leadership to identify new threats and opportunities for the Campaign to play a significant leadership role. Provides professional expertise and training to support staff and volunteers.
  5. Ensure that volunteers assume meaningful roles in the program/campaign.
  6. Co-ordinates media outreach activities related to the campaign/program. Serves as Sierra Club’s Alaska spokesperson to media outlets and promotes volunteer media exposure.
  7. Writes, edits, and reviews educational and advocacy materials.
  8. Introduces creative ideas and approaches for consideration.
  9. Handles miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned

Knowledge & Skills:

-- B.A./B.S. degree in an environmental or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

-- At least 3 years’ experience in the planning and implementation of campaigns, which includes fundraising, strategy, organizing, media relations and engaging political and business leaders.

-- Proficient knowledge of federal lands management processes. Familiarity with or experience working on Alaska environmental issues. 

-- Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.

-- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with volunteers.

-- Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.

 

This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and John Muir Local.
