OCEANA, an international organization focused solely on protecting the world’s oceans, is dedicated to achieving concrete in-the-water improvements in ocean health through science-based campaigns with clearly articulated goals.  Our campaigns are carried out by teams of scientists, economists, lawyers, communications specialists and advocates.

OCEANA is seeking Campaign Organizers for our Climate and Energy Campaign.  We are currently recruiting for two positions, one based in Washington, DC and one based in South Florida You will organize our national outreach effort to engage citizens behind OCEANA’s campaign to prevent the expansion of offshore drilling and expedite the implementation of offshore wind on the U.S. east coast.   With direction from the Campaign Manager, you will work independently to execute a campaign plan and carry out the tasks necessary to meet campaign objectives.  You will track timelines and report on progress to the Campaign Manager.  You will manage a varied and high volume workload.  Initiative to work on your own to meet deadlines and accomplish tasks is required.  This position is based in Washington, DC.   

Principal duties and responsibilities include:

  • Manage a national list of volunteer sign-ups. Work via phone and email to engage, educate, train, and motivate people who indicated they wish to volunteer for the campaign.
  • Recruit new volunteers through every available means, including website recruitment, online advertising, and social media.
  • Execute the campaign in conjunction with a team of professionals, including other field staff, online activists, legislative and communications professionals, vendors, consultants, and others.
  • Provide timely reports on the progress of the campaign, and lead the charge for overcoming obstacles to ensure goals and objectives are met.
  • Perform additional duties as needed or assigned.

The successful candidate will have the following experience and qualifications: 

  • Two years of organizing experience, including experience engaging volunteers and building a foundation of support for a policy outcome.
  • Experience using primarily phone, email, and social media to engage large numbers of people as volunteers/campaigners.
  • A proven track record in grassroots field organizing and public speaking.
  • Experience coordinating media relations.
  • A track record of being detail oriented, with good organizational skills and follow-through.
  • Demonstrated initiative to self-motivate, work with diverse communities, and serve as a team leader.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Computer literacy, particularly with Microsoft Office applications.
  • An ability to work well with others.
