Wildlife Policy Analyst

The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) is a 501(c)(3) independent, international, non-profit advocacy organization based in Washington DC. Since its founding in 1984, EIA has pioneered the use of undercover investigative techniques to expose environmental crimes and other abuses against the natural world. These crimes include illegal trade in endangered wildlife, illegal logging and associated trade in illegal timber, and the trade in both climate damaging and ozone layer depleting gases. EIA has directly brought about positive changes in international laws and government policies, saving the lives of millions of rare and endangered species and reducing illegal logging and associated timber trade.

EIA is seeking a full-time Policy Analyst in its Washington, D.C. office to support its wildlife campaign and help us protect the Arctic’s whale populations, as well as Africa’s elephants and rhinos. We are looking for a motivated, organized, and committed individual to join one of the most dynamic teams in Washington today.

The position will entail a wide range of activities, including:

• Conduct outreach and advocacy within various fora to promote strategies to promote marine conservation, focusing on the beluga whale and other Arctic cetaceans.
• Support campaigns within the International Maritime Organization (IMO), International Whaling Commission (IWC) and other venues.
• Gather information on maritime trade, fuel usage, and environmental impacts of shipping or other potential threats to beluga habitat.
• Liaise with cetacean science and policy experts from around the world to inform campaign objectives.
• Expand EIA’s presence and impact in Alaska relevant to beluga whale conservation issues.
• Draft briefings, reports, public comments memos and other products on belugas, or other threats to endangered species and innovative solutions to reduce such threats.
• Work with team members to implement a multi-faceted campaign.
• Travel internationally and domestically as required.
• Support other species campaigns as needed.

Qualifications:

• Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated experience of campaigning or advocacy for wildlife in an environmental or conservation group or similar civil society organization.
• Excellent research and writing skills.
• Excellent organization skills with a strong sense of self-motivation.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Four-year degree in a relevant field (graduate degree in environmental science or maritime policy preferable).
• Working knowledge of, or experience with, relevant fora including: International Maritime Organization (IMO), International Whaling Commission (IWC), Arctic Council, or Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Other highly desirable qualifications include:

• Marine mammal science or Arctic policy expertise.
• Experience with AIS.
• Graduate degree in a related field.
• Language skills – preferably Japanese, Russian, or French.
