Description

Country water assistants are needed to provide mid-term consultancy services in the implementation of the SIDA-financed REC project “Water Resources Management Good Practices and Knowledge Transfer (WATER POrT)”, implemented from 2014 to 2017.

Location of positions

North Africa: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt
Middle East: Jordan, Lebanon

Area of expertise: Water Management

The Water POrT project focuses on promoting and enhancing the sustainable use of regional water resources in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. It offers a platform for building skills and transferring knowledge on integrated water resources management and adaptation to climate change through involvement with water authorities at national level and with a broad selection of stakeholders. This will be achieved by: (i) introducing methodological capacity building and reinforcing the skills of respective national authorities; (ii) promoting a framework for common understanding between water practitioners and stakeholders; and (iii) strengthening the abilities of practitioners to deal with the impacts of climate change on water resources.

Description of tasks

  • Facilitating communication between the WATER POrT project team and various stakeholders, international and regional organisations active in the MENA region, and relevant projects and initiatives
  • Conducting desk research and processing information
  • Some travelling and conducting of interviews
  • Translating documents (3 pages maximum)
  • Reporting in English and Arabic
  • Assisting in the preparation of project documents and organising project events

Envisaged workload and duration of the assignment

An estimated 100 workdays over a 12-month period

Education required

A bachelor’s degree in water management, environmental sciences, international relations or other relevant field

Functional knowledge and abilities

  • Knowledge of global and national water initiatives and development trends
  • Strong interpersonal skills and analytical capabilities
  • Expertise in public participation, decision making and activities related to environment and water issues
  • An understanding of regional and national circumstances in MENA countries concerning water management issues will be an important advantage

Skills required

  • Fluency in both written and spoken Arabic and English
  • Ability to work in and cooperate with a multi-ethnic international team
  • Ability to work in a flexible manner and to meet tight deadlines
  • Computer literacy
