Food & Water Watch is a leading national consumer advocacy organization that runs dynamic, cutting edge campaigns challenging the corporate control and abuse of our food and water resources. Since 2005, we have won significant victories to protect our food and water. Our work has been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and other major media outlets.

Food & Water Watch is hiring two skilled campaign organizers to work as independent consultants for six months. One will be based in Los Angeles and the other in the San Francisco Bay Area. They will coordinate campaigns to defeat the Water Bond that will be on the November ballot in California.

The Water Bond would cost California taxpayers an estimated $24 billion over 30 years, taking money that would otherwise go to pay for essential services like health care, education, police/fire and state parks. The money would be used to build dams and other water projects that primarily benefit special interests in California, including corporate agribusinesses. The bond allows private corporations to own, manage and profit from these water projects, despite the fact that they are bankrolled by taxpayers.

Responsibilities:

In coordination with our San Francisco and Los Angeles staff, develop and run a six-month campaign to reach local and regional organizations, solicit endorsements, recruit volunteers, establish a public presence, and communicate with voters in our target areas.

Recruit hundreds of volunteers for a get-out-the-vote effort during the second phase of the campaign.

Train and develop a core leadership team of volunteers in your area.

Requirements:

Education: College degree required.

Experience: Ideal applicants will have 2+ campaign cycles’ experience with field or community organizing on political campaigns, including targeting, training, voter identification, and get out the vote drives.

Knowledge: Organizing and advocacy skills including organizing volunteers, speaking in front of large audiences, developing and implementing campaign plans, developing activist leaders, and ability to organize get-out-the-vote campaigns; knowledge of water issues in California a plus.

Skills: Excellent communication skills; strong interpersonal and planning skills; excellent organizational skills; detail oriented; and strong work ethic.

Capabilities: Ability to work as part of a campaign team, with the understanding that work will often be done independently. Ability to think creatively and quickly to respond to campaign developments; demonstrated leadership capability; ability to work well with a wide variety of people and to coordinate diverse tasks; can-do attitude; and commitment to public interest work. Must be able to take direction, work well under pressure, handle multiple tasks at once, and adapt to changing situations on a daily basis.

Conditions: Strong interest in and commitment to promoting the goals of Food & Water Watch. Willingness to work long hours.

This is a six-month independent consultant position.
