California State Director & Community Relations Liaison, State Affairs

 

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a California State Director & Community Relations Liaison for its State Affairs Division.  State Directors are responsible for carrying out HSUS national and state agendas and priorities within their state.  Other duties include, but are not limited to:  advancing state and federal legislative priorities; building coalitions with local groups and expanding a humane network within the state; developing localized strategies to implement national campaigns; promoting emergency and disaster preparedness; representing The HSUS in local and state media; maintaining relationships with state agencies and public officials; facilitating enforcement of animal protection laws; advancing development opportunities; and  assisting with other projects as necessary.  Other duties include but are not limited to: work with grassroots supporters to strengthen and expand grassroots volunteer base within the state, arrange and provide training opportunities for citizen lobbyists and key volunteer leaders,  and organize lobbying and meeting activities that involve key volunteers engaging with legislators and governmental offices.  A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent; four-five years of experience in animal protection issues and work; two-four years legislative/government affairs exposure preferred; grassroots outreach, advocacy, and or campaign experience desirable.   In addition, strong organizational skills; strong oral and written communication skills; public speaking skills; the ability to work independently, take initiative and maintain good communication with others;  and willingness to travel is highly desired.
