Position Summary

TU now seeks a qualified individual with experience in grassroots outreach, organizing, and policy analysis to serve as our California Field Coordinator. This individual will work around the state to identify and recruit new partners for our sportsmen's conservation network; to educate and organize these and existing partners to deliver the "sportsmen's voice" to the general public, to resource managers, and to policy-makers; to gain stronger protections for key fish and game habitat on public lands through new policy, regulations, and planning processes; to initiate and advance place-based initiatives that will better conserve and restore public lands and their fishing and hunting opportunities; and to coordinate TU's conservation efforts between staff, our grassroots, the sporting community, and resource managers.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Engage in in key public lands management processes (i.e. national forest plan revisions and project decisions, Travel Management) in the central and southern Sierra Nevada, in southern California, and in the coastal ranges from Santa Barbara to Del Norte counties.
  • Engage in place-based campaigns to conserve federal public lands/waters with exceptional habitat value through protective land use designations (e.g., Wild and Scenic River and Wilderness)
  • Advocate for protection of habitat on public lands in CA in energy development projects and processes; lead TU's federal energy policy advocacy in CA.
  • Advance southern steelhead restoration campaign through media coverage and implementation of Trabuco Creek fish passage project.
  • Educate, organize and mobilize TU's grassroots in support of TU's public lands protection goals in California
  • With support from the Communications Director, prepare communication, outreach and education materials to support public lands conservation objectives; deliver materials and information to target audiences using traditional and social media as well as other outlets.
  • Assist with fundraising for the California Program.
  • Build and expand youth education/outreach in the southern Sierra and southern California.
  • Support the build-out of TU's grassroots capacity in California by recruiting new members and helping to organize new local TU chapters.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in outreach and organizing for natural resource conservation.
  • Superior interpersonal skills and ability to work constructively with a wide range of partners, primarily sportsmen but also elected officials, land owners, scientists, agricultural and sport fishing industry representatives, other nonprofit groups, foundations, and public agencies.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong background in public lands management planning and policy analysis highly desired. Previous experience with media, grassroots outreach, grant writing, and policy analysis also highly desired.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly throughout California (primarily by car), and occasionally to other states and to Washington, DC. Valid California driver's license and own vehicle required.
  • Demonstrated organizational, project management, and problem solving abilities. The job requires the ability to work independently and to prioritize and implement work objectives with minimal supervision.
  • Bachelor's (or higher) degree in a relevant field desired.
  • Demonstrated commitment to river and fisheries conservation necessary, and knowledge of TU preferred. Passion for coldwater fish and fishing alo preferred.

Location and Compensation

The position will be based in one of several locations: the Berkeley headquarters, the Sacramento area, the Fresno-Bakersfield corridor, or somewhere in the central or southern Sierra. Salary will be commensurate with experience, non-profit scale. TU offers an excellent benefits package.
