Clean Vehicles and Climate & Energy Programs

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), the leading science-based organization at the center of today’s most exciting and important policy debates, seeks an individual to work with a top-notch, multi-disciplinary team in our California office to plan and implement outreach components of California and Western States campaigns on vehicles, fuels, energy, and climate issues. The Outreach Coordinator will oversee execution of primary outreach campaign elements, cultivate relationships with key allies, mobilize science experts and activists, utilize web-based organizing tools for creative on-line and off-line action, and participate in cross-programmatic, organization-building outreach efforts.  

Responsibilities

  • Working with other program staff, develop and implement grassroots and grasstops outreach strategies to achieve legislative and regulatory campaign goals and design and implement corporate and consumer-oriented outreach efforts.
  • Cultivate relationships with key allies and represent UCS in coalitions and at conferences and other public events.
  • Educate and mobilize UCS members, activists and experts on California and Western States campaigns. This includes creation of action alerts to notify UCS activists and experts of opportunities to influence policy decisions and organizing off-line events to enlist support of UCS activists and experts. 
  • Work with program staff to ensure California and Western States website pages and other online resources are up-to-date and effective for campaign outreach.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of online activist technologies and tactics. Work with UCS communications and outreach staff to continue enhancing UCS’s electronic organizing tools. 
  • Represent the California & Western States office in coordinating outreach plans with Climate & Energy and Clean Vehicles departments as well as with other UCS departments.
  • Maintain and update working knowledge of general California policy issues and climate impacts and solutions. May participate in some advocacy activities, such as meetings with legislators or state agency staff. 


Qualifications and experience
This position requires three to five years of relevant experience in developing campaign strategy and tactics, organizing grassroots and grasstops activists, coordinating outreach events, and directing online marketing or activism, preferably in a nonprofit organization. Must have demonstrated ability to conceive, plan and implement effective outreach campaigns; ability to use web-based platforms and sophisticated online tools to advance advocacy goals; demonstrated capability to manage multiple projects for extended periods of time, and to be flexible to respond to fast-changing campaign needs; ability to write for and speak to lay audiences; and ability to communicate effectively with professionals who may be expert and/or prominent in their fields. A solid level of understanding of database maintenance, web management and on-line organizing tools, as well as Microsoft Office, is required. Some supervisory experience is also preferred. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required.

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

Compensation, Hours and Location: This is a full time position based in UCS’s Berkeley, CA office. For candidates who meet all position requirements, the salary is in the low $50s.
