Description

WCS is seeking applicants for the position of Business Development Manager for Niassa National Reserve (NNR) in Mozambique. Niassa National Reserve (NNR) is one of the last wild places on Earth and its financial sustainability depends on its continued viability as a tourism and sport hunting destination and its ability to diversify and expand complementary financial and revenue sources. In response to these needs, this position will manage NNR concessionaire relationships, including leading concession tendering and contracting processes, monitoring compliance with contract and business plan implementation, and ensuring good communications and coordination between concessionaires and the NNR management. The position will also have responsibility for leading the design and implementation of strategies to increase and diversify financial and revenue sources, including strengthening the current tourism concessions system, coordinating fundraising efforts, building NNR international recognition and exploring potential new revenue streams (e.g. climate change mitigation and biodiversity offsets). NNR is managed under a partnership agreement between WCS and Mozambique’s Protected Area Authority (ANAC) and this position reports directly to the NNR Warden and WCS Niassa Program Director.

We are looking for a proven leader with capacity to manage and negotiate with diverse stakeholders and to build partnerships in tourism (including photographic and sports hunting) and other ventures that can generate reliable revenue sources for NNR. Key skills and qualifications include:

  1. Ten-plus years of experience leading, managing, and/or advising on business development and management in conservation areas, including for consumptive and non-consumptive tourism activities.
  2. Knowledge of conservation management and tourism planning and development in Mozambique and relevant national and international policies, laws and institutions.
  3. Strong communication skills. Working proficiency in English and Portuguese required.
  4. Ability to dialogue, negotiate and build consensus between key stakeholders, including Mozambican Government at national, provincial and district levels, the private sector, conservation partners and local communities.
  5. Preferably a Masters in business administration or biodiversity conservation management
  6. Flexibility, optimism, good humour, passion for excellence, self-motivated to achieve a collective purpose.

This position will be based in Maputo, with significant time in NNR (estimate at 50%). Interested candidates who meet the above qualifications, should apply before 21 April 2017 by sending an application letter and CV together with the names and contact information of three referees to wcsmozambique@wcs.org with  ‘NNR Business Development Manager’ in the email title. Only short listed candidates will be contacted for interviews.
