Description

Overview:

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

ZSL recognises the significant threat posed by irresponsible and unsustainable business practice to global biodiversity and the landscapes in which we work. The Business and Biodiversity programme works to address these threats and to deliver a ZSL mission target to ensure best practice is business-as-usual in at least 1 million kmof priority production landscape. The programme works both at the global scale, participating in technical working groups, standard-setting bodies and delivering the SPOTT initiative, and with in-country colleagues to provide technical support and undertake activities to ensure conservation success, with projects in particular within Indonesia and Cameroon related to oil palm, timber, pulp and paper, rubber and mining.

Role Profile:

ZSL is seeking an experienced specialist to join the growing ZSL Business and Biodiversity programme, taking on responsibility for the management, coordination and delivery of the Programme’s contribution to in-country conservation projects and grants in Africa.  In the immediate term, this focus will be on projects in Cameroon, to include national best practice and landscape projects in the TRIDOM landscape, around the Dja Biosphere Reserve and Douala-Edea landscape, where key commodities include oil palm, rubber, timber and pulp, and mining. The post-holder will also provide technical support for the Business and Biodiversity global programme, representing ZSL where appropriate on major working groups on topics such as High Conservation Value (HCV) and High Carbon Stock (HCS), and assisting the programme manager in advising and supporting in-country colleagues. The individual will provide technical support on private sector engagement and industry best practice, particularly environmental best practice for production, and represents ZSL in its relationship with relevant industry groups and companies. Based in London, the post-holder will travel frequently to Cameroon and other locations as necessary, to include major conferences and meetings with companies. The post-holder will be expected to support the global and regional programme managers with the scoping and securing of funds.

Person Specification:

  • Proven technical knowledge and prior experience working on business and biodiversity.  Experience working on the ground to implement biodiversity and environmental best practice for business, ideally in developing countries, is highly desirable.
  • The candidate must have experience in dealing with business and participating in technical working groups.
  • Experience in project management and delivery – to include associated budget management and stakeholder relations. Experience in proposal development and managing donor relations is desirable.
  • Ability to work effectively with teams, with strong interpersonal and communication skills, in addition to confidence in problem solving using sound judgement.
  • A degree in a relevant subject or equivalent level of work experience in a relevant field.
  • Fluent English and a strong grasp of spoken and written French are essential.
