Description

Built & Managed Landscape Programme –
Built Environment Officer

All British bat species make use of built structures and for some species they are essential as roost sites. Therefore, the actions of the building and associated industries can have a huge impact on the populations of bats in the UK. In recognising the importance of the building sector to bat conservation, BCT identified the need for a specific role to effect a positive change. The outcome of this was the creation of the Bats and Built Environment Project which was launched in January 2007. Since its inception this programme of work has made major progress and used innovative partnerships and approaches. BCT's expertise is now actively sought by the sector.

We are looking for someone with the business planning and income generation skills to grow the role to become more self-sustaining through the services we offer to the building sector. To seek and deliver positive, strategic, collaborative outcomes that benefit bat conservation.

This post sits within the wider Managed Landscape Programme and a secondary role of this post is in assisting the Director of Conservation develop a profile for bat conservation in the agricultural sector.

The post acts to bridge the communication gap that exists between conservation and the building sector and additionally to assist in taking the message to the agricultural community. The ability to deliver presentations tailored as appropriate for conferences, boards, seminars etc, write articles and reports, organise conferences and give press interviews are all core skills for this post. Lobbying skills and the ability to react quickly and seize opportunities are also important, as is the need to appreciate the perspective of those with different drivers and areas of expertise.
