Building and Grounds Manager - 2013
Earthdance is an artist-run workshop, residency, and retreat center located in the Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts. We provide a dynamic mix of dance, somatic, and interdisciplinary arts training, with a focus on sustainable living, social justice, and community. Earthdance has been spearheading innovative arts programming and maintaining a beautiful facility for rental groups in the Pioneer Valley for nearly three decades.
During employment at Earthdance, our core staff live on-site as a component of our residential community educational program. The Buildings and Grounds Manager is a core staff position, responsible for directly supervising and coordinating the activities of the Buildings and Grounds and Garden staff for Earthdance, to ensure optimal levels of operations, customer/resident safety, maintenance/improvement of the Employer’s Buildings and Grounds, and financial planning. This position reports to the Operations Manager and manages the implementation of buildings and grounds projects, both daily and those related to capital improvements/code compliance.
Primary areas of responsibility:
- Manage the implementation of buildings and grounds projects
- Monitor the facility to ensure that it remains safe, secure, and well maintained.
- Oversee the maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment, and electrical and mechanical systems.
- Manage all custodial services, grounds maintenance, mechanical and electrical maintenance, structural repairs, heating and air conditioning, and recycling and refuse.
- Oversee departmental staff and volunteers, and provide basic training and supervision where appropriate.
- Participate in architectural and engineering planning and design, including space and installation management.
- Oversee construction and renovation projects to improve efficiency and to ensure that facilities meet environmental, health, and security standards, and comply with state code regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Operations Manager and Executive Director of Business and Finance.
Areas of responsibility may include:
- Directs and supervises employees and volunteers engaged in Earthdance operations.
- Plans and prepares work schedules and assigns employees to specific duties.
- Manages issues of code compliance and safety for Earthdance buildings and grounds.
- Attends weekly Core Staff meetings, and Operations Meetings; leads weekly All Staff meetings and House Cleans, and bi-weekly Volunteer meetings, and occasionally leads meal preps and meal cleans for rental groups and Earthdance programs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills/Competencies:
- Related work experience, bachelor’s degree in a relevant field a plus
- Background as an electrician, general contractor, facilities construction, or related
- Understanding of Massachusetts building codes and regulations
- Experience supervising and leading projects and teams
- Ability to develop spreadsheets/worksheets using Microsoft excel and office

The initial employment period is two years, with possibility of extension based upon performance. The position start date is October 1, 2013. This is a 30 hour/week, residential core staff position. Work regularly requires availability on weekends and evenings. Compensation includes $650/mo salary, room and board. Training is available beginning September 1, 2013, and is unpaid in wages, though room and board are available throughout the training period.
