POSITION SUMMARY

The Seasonal Preserve Assistants will conduct various stewardship and ecological monitoring activities on the Brown Ranch and Pigeon Point Preserves in North Dakota.  She/he will live at the Brown Ranch but may travel extensively to other North Dakota preserves.  Primary responsibilities will include but may not be limited to: prescribed burning, fence construction, noxious weed control and monitoring control efforts, assisting with the collection of ecological monitoring data, assisting with firebreak preparation, and maintenance of preserve facilities and equipment.  The Seasonal Preserve Assistants supervise no staff and are supervised by the Sheyenne Delta Land Steward.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assist with the construction and maintenance of fences.
  • Assist with the control of noxious weeds and monitoring of control efforts.
  • Assist with the maintenance of vehicles and equipment and preserve grounds and buildings.
  • Assist with the collection of monitoring data on forest and prairie ecosystems, grazing, rare plants, and avian species.
  • Assist with firebreak preparation and prescribed burns in Minnesota and North Dakota.
  • Provide information to preserve visitors and act as a local representative for The Nature Conservancy.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management. 
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment.
  • Experience performing physical work.

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completed at least two years in natural resource or range management preferred.  Strong knowledge of the flora of the Great Plains and vegetation sampling techniques preferred.
  • Ability to work independently, following verbal or written instructions.
  • Ability to do outdoor work using hand tools and ranch equipment with a minimum amount of supervision including chainsaws, tractors, ATVs, 4x4 vehicles, and mowers.
  • Experience in the safe handling and use of pesticides.
  • Experience with prescribed fire management.  Experience with fire control tools and pump units preferred. 
  • Prescribed and/or wildland fire experience preferred, but not mandatory.  Qualified as or able to meet qualifications for FFT2, including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fireline (L-180), Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130), National Incident Management System(IS-700) and one training burn serving under the supervision of a qualified FFT2.  Candidates lacking elements of this training may be considered and training opportunities afforded if selected for one of the crews.
  • Technicians will be required to attend and pass TNC sponsored fire and equipment training during the first full week of employment.  Training time is paid at normal salary rate.
  • Willingness to live and work in an isolated rural environment, share living quarters, and travel frequently.  Willingness to work irregular hours.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a team member and work toward a common goal. 
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week), temporary position with employment dates of April 28, 2013 - June 28, 2013.
  • This position ends June 28, but candidate may be rehired for a similar fall position starting August 15, 2013 - November 8, 2013.
  • Housing is provided.

AUTO SAFETY POLICY

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program.  Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."  Please see further details in the Auto Safety Program document available at www.nature.org/careers. 

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

The Preserve Management Assistant may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions:

  • require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
  • present frequent possibility of injury
  • require long and irregular hours in isolated settings

SALARY INFORMATION
  • $9.00 to $11.00 per hour, depending on experience.
