| | The Nature Conservancy is entering its third year of offering internships intended to increase the diversity of our staff. Our 2009 Summer Internship program seeks to enrich and diversify the field of conservation through paid internship opportunities to students currently underrepresented in the conservation field. The internships offered cover a wide range of fields and are available in locations throughout the U.S. and will begin summer 2009. | | ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS | | o The Bog Turtle Research Intern will provide technical and scientific support in the collection and analysis of field data associated with a radio telemetry study, as related to The Nature Conservancy’s Rare Communities conservation program. S/he will work as a member of a team collecting data from sites throughout northeastern Pennsylvania. This may include some or all of the following: • Radio tracking 10-20 bog turtles 1-3 days/week • Recording GPS locations, weather and environmental variables • Map making and spatial analysis using GIS • Weekly data entry
This internship would be a great opportunity for an undergraduate research project or a master’s thesis study. There may be an opportunity to participate with data analysis and write up after September 30, 2009.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: • Bachelor’s degree (in progress or completed) in biology, ecology, geography or related field is preferred. • Must exercise confidentiality with field data and location information. • Ability to record and manage multiple data sets at multiple sites. • Ability to travel to Harrisburg and Northeastern PA. • Ability to manage and prioritize tasks from multiple sources. • Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s). • Ability to read maps and use compass and weather instruments. • Ability to take and record precise measurements. • Ability to use GPS to record multiple location coordinates. • GIS experience, including ability to utilize data to create appropriate maps is preferred. • Knowledge and experience with identification of plants is preferred. • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers). • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means. • Proven organizational skills and attention to detail.
COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS: • Formulate ideas and communicate clearly with others, both orally and in written form. • Work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people, including scientists, preserve staff, and others, providing and obtaining needed information. • Function productively as a member of a work team.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT: • Ability to work in variable weather conditions, remote locations and often in physically demanding circumstances. • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record. • Willingness to work long hours in an isolated setting. • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines. • Work requires moderate physical exertion and/or physical strain.
