One post at King Edward Point Research Station, South Georgia (BAS 07/08) One post at Rothera Research Station, Antarctica (BAS 19/08)
You love boats but you love challenges even more and here’s a unique opportunity to combine the two by working in one of the most fascinating and extraordinary places on earth.
You will have a vital role to play in supporting world-class scientific research being carried out in the Antarctic. Your activities will involve operating and maintaining the rigid inflatable boats and associated equipment that are used to transport marine scientists, dive parties and terrestrial field parties to their study sites.
Safety will be a key concern and you will be able to demonstrate extensive small boat handling in costal waters in a professional capacity. Your ability to carry out outboard engine maintenance will be matched by your navigation and radio communication skills. You will also be IT literate and able to work and live within a multi-disciplinary team.
Not that it’s all work and no play. There’s plenty of time to explore and enjoy what Antarctica has to offer. Plus all your essentials like food and living arrangements are funded, so you’ll see a lot more of your salary when you get back.
BAS will have a stand highlighting its boating activities at RIBEX 2008, May 9th-11th at Cowes, Isle of Wight.
