Title:               Board Relations Coordinator – Development Division

Reports to:     Major Gifts Manager – Development Division

Location:        New York,NY

The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior.  Based in New York City, with offices throughout the United States and worldwide, the Rainforest Alliance works with people whose livelihoods depend on the land, helping them transform the way they grow food, harvest wood and host travelers.

Position Summary:

The Board Relations Coordinator will work closely with the Manager and Executive Vice President in all business involving the Board of Directors, including identification, research, stewardship, cultivation and solicitation of gifts from board members and board prospects.  S/he will coordinate the logistics and preparation for all board and board committee meetings and trips and recruitment of new board members.  S/he will also participate in all committee meetings for the Leapfrog Campaign, the Rainforest Alliance’s five-year, $20 million fundraising campaign.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the scheduling, logistics and preparation for all Board meetings and retreats, including assembling and mailing pre-board meeting materials;
  • Work with Manager and Executive Vice President to set meeting agendas for the development, campaign and nominating committees;
  • Prepare meeting minutes at all board and select committee meetings;
  • Ensure timely follow up from all board and select committee meetings by serving as a liaison between the board and development staff;
  • Coordinate strategies for engaging board members and prospects;
  • Draft and edit written materials to the Board of Directors including stewardship, cultivation and solicitation letters in conjunction with the development team;
  • Coordinate all board recruitment activities, including research on and cultivation of prospects;
  • Provide coordination and support for aspects of the Rainforest Alliance’s capital campaign and major gifts program as they relate to board members and prospects;
  • Ensure timely, thorough and personalized stewardship of all members of the Board;
  • Schedule meetings with and for members of the Board as required;
  • Maintain paper and electronic files for board members and prospects; and
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required;
  • 5-7 years administrative/professional experience, including fundraising experience, preferably in a Major Gifts/Board context;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including experience taking meeting minutes;
  • Ability to prioritize and juggle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment; 
  • Written and verbal proficiency in Spanish a plus;
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite and Internet) and comfort working with database programs;
  • Knowledgeable user of Raiser’s Edge donor tracking software, preferred;
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills with an ability to interact with diverse audiences;
  • Ability to work in a team structure as well as independently, be creative, flexible, take initiative, be attentive to detail;
  • Dependability, diplomacy, good organizational skills and a sense of humor; and
  • Knowledge of and commitment to environmental issues preferred.
