 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Blue River Stewardship Intern participates in preserve operations and management in southeastern Indiana, mostly in Harrison County.   The intern will conduct intensive habitat restoration of glades, barrens and forests and may assist with other preserve duties as required.  Applicant will be required to use chainsaws, brushcutters, backpack sprayers, herbicides and other control tools in a natural area.

This position is a six week to three month unpaid internship position with The Nature Conservancy in Corydon, Indiana.  It intends to provide interns with valuable work experience, guidance, and hands on practice of on the ground conservation in exchange for structured volunteer work by the participant.  The Nature Conservancy can provide a letter of recommendation or fulfill reference requests upon successful completion of the internship.
 BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
 Chosen candidate must have a High School Diploma and 6 months of related experience, be able to perform physical work, sometimes in extreme weather conditions, be available for 15 hours/week, and have a demonstrated interest in conservation issues and/or land management.
 BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
 The Blue River Intern participates in preserve operations, maintenance and management.  This may include one or more of the following functions:
•Regular use of chainsaws, brush cutters, sprayers, herbicides and other equipment in natural areas. 
•Invasive exotic plant species removal
•Maintain tools and equipment
•Maintain preserve areas frequented by the visiting public
•Assist with biological surveys
•Other duties, as assigned
•High school diploma, with preference for college/university students or recent graduates
•Demonstrated interest in conservation issues and land management
•Ability to operate various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. brushcutter, chainsaw, 4 x 4 vehicles, ATV) is preferred.
•Ability to follow instructions from colleagues
•Ability to perform physical work, sometime under adverse conditions or in inclement weather
•Valid drivers license
•Knowledge of Indiana plants/community types is preferred.
•May work under close supervision or infrequent supervision

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The Conservation Practitioner Intern may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions:
•require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
•present frequent possibility of injury
•require long hours in isolated settings
 ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
 This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program.  Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."  Please see further details in the Auto Safety Program document available at www.nature.org/careers. 

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
