Application Deadline: Position will remain open until filled

Introduction:

American Bird Conservancy (ABC), an international bird conservation organization, is seeking a dynamic, entrepreneurial leader to manage the ABC’s Pesticides Program in its office in Washington, DC.  The Program Manager will advocate for the reduction or elimination of the most hazardous pesticides and other toxics to birds through policy reform, information synthesis, and outreach.  ABC’s goal is to remove or restrict the worst pesticides from use throughout the Americas in order to protect birds, people, and wildlife.

This work will include reaching out to Capitol Hill, federal agencies, state governments and NGO partners.  This position is supervised by the Vice President of Conservation Advocacy.

Primary Duties:

    1. Lead advocacy efforts to remove or restrict the worst pesticides from use in the U.S.  Facilitate ABC’s quick response capability in addressing emergency exemption and special local need permits.  Draft comment letters to EPA stating ABC’s position on specific pesticide issues.

    1. Provide policy, scientific and technical leadership at local, state, and national and international forums to further advance the Pesticide Program’s goals.

    1. Lead efforts to inform and focus the attention of conservation and health groups, government agencies, the public and the pesticide industry on the effects of pesticides on birds and the relevance of pesticide exposure to broader environmental issues.

    1. Broaden support for pesticide regulatory reform through leadership in the National Pesticide Reform Coalition. Enhance information exchange, build campaign networks, and promote the sharing of resources and expertise among wildlife, environmental and public health organizations.

    1. Communicate with international partners and multilateral agencies in developing appropriate pesticide programs and policies.  Develop capacity for disseminating pesticide information internationally.

    1. Work with government regulatory agencies to strengthen wildlife protection from pesticides through regulatory system reform and by improving coordination across agencies. Serve as a wildlife conservation stakeholder on national government advisory committees and working groups.

  1. Support other bird conservation programs of ABC as directed.

Position Requirements:

    1. Have an advanced degree and a minimum of four years equivalent work experience, preferably with knowledge of toxicology, avian physiology, public health, agriculture, the law, or other related field. The ability to develop persuasive science-based arguments and solutions.

    1. Background knowledge of pesticide issues from policy, legal, scientific, or conservation perspectives.  A familiarity with FIFRA, the pesticide registration process, EPA, USDA and USFWS.

    1. Demonstrated ability to work on complex biological and policy issues and the ability to communicate these issues in writing and in speech.  Experience and skill in strategic planning and the development of multifaceted campaigns.

    1. Possess a willingness to consider viewpoints, excellent skills in diplomacy, strong leadership ability, the ability to work successfully with government bureaucracy, a professional and courteous demeanor, perseverance, and a sense of humor. Willingness to sometimes be a minority voice in advocating for wildlife-friendly pesticide regulations.

    1. Ability to work on and lead interdisciplinary teams to build partnerships and promote cooperation among conservation organizations, public health organizations, and other advocacy and policy groups.

    1. Commitment to the ABC mission, an interest in birds, and the goals of the Pesticides Program.

    1. Willingness to travel on occasion.

  1. Excellent oral and written communications skills.
