Birdlife Fundraising and Communications Manager, Suva, Fiji
Do you want a challenge working in an exotic location where it is summer all-year round? Opportunites to work in these locations in such a varied and exciting role don’t come up often, but we need an experienced Fundraising and Communications Manager in our Pacific Partnership office in Suva, Fiji.
What is BirdLife International?
BirdLife International is a voice for birds and conservation worldwide. It is the world’s largest partnership of conservation NGOs with a presence in 121 countries. In the Pacific BirdLife has partners in Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, New Zealand and Palau and is looking to develop new partners in Samoa, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. BirdLife Pacific’s regional office is in Suva, Fiji; its global headquarters is in Cambridge, UK.
BirdLife is at the cutting edge of conservation and environmental sustainability in the Pacific where there are 42 critically endangered bird species, a quarter of the word’s total. So what we do is urgent and essential. In the Pacific, as in New Zealand, our biggest enemy is introduced invasive species like rats. We are also working to save tropical forests, protect migratory birds as they fly between North and South each year and to protect our oceans and our seabirds. In the big international forums, we are active on climate change and protecting the world’s precious biodiversity.
A big part of what BirdLife does is about people and in doing our conservation work we look to empower local people to protect their own environment and to help them maintain sustainable livelihoods.
The challenge
The Fundraising and Communications Manager is a challenging and varied role. In it you will be fundraising for the Pacific partner organisations and the different projects and programmes that they run. You will work with local BirdLife and partner staff to help develop fundraising proposals to enable them to successfully protect nature and support local people in the Pacific. You will be working with other International and local partner fundraisers in a range of fundraising activities. An important part of our fundraising relates to international foundations and funders. At the same time you will be looking to develop other fundraising channels and opportunities. You will have an excellent record in maintaining relationships with funders.
You will be the key person with our external and internal communications. This will include producing newsletters and press releases, managing our web-content and also managing a programme for volunteers. Communications with our partners and their members will be an important role.
Are you the person?
You will have a successful track record in fundraising covering a range of channels. You will have an interest in conservation and also in development, social and political issues. Working with multiple partners and in different countries, you will have a flair for diplomacy, networking and problem-solving. You will be a confident communicator and have some experience with social media, writing newsletters and press releases. You will be a self-starter and be prepared to go the extra kilometre. You will have good Microsoft Office skills and be willing to travel and work long hours. A relevant tertiary qualification is desirable.
It would be great if you have experience in conservation management or fundraising. Experience in, and knowledge of, Pacific communities would be a real help in this position as would some ability in the French language. Working with partners, communities or national teams in training and capacity-building would be another plus.
