In accomplishing our mission, Friends of the Earth is working at the nexus of environmental protection, economic policy and social justice to fundamentally transform the way our country and the world values people and the environment. We are focused on reforming economic drivers such as tax or trade policy that are often used to empower corporations and government to harm the environment.
Our current campaigns focus on clean energy and solutions to global warming, protecting people from toxic and new, potentially harmful technologies, and promoting smarter, low-pollution transportation alternatives.
We are seeking to hire a talented and dedicated individual to augment our efforts to stop the use of dirty biofuels. The position will:
- Develop intensive expertise on biofuels policy and politics;
- Work with groups within the environmental community and other interest groups in coalitions focused on eliminating incentives for dirty biofuels;
- Educate members of Congress, the administration and opinion leaders about the environmental, economic and social costs of biofuels;
- Conduct and oversee research and analysis to develop reports and articles to educate non-governmental organizations, policymakers, and the public;
- Develop public education and campaign materials on the environmental, economic and social costs of biofuels;
- Represent Friends of the Earth’s position on biofuels to the media and the public;
- Update strategic campaign plan and develop new communications strategies in conjunction with the Climate and Energy Project Director, Communications Director and Online Communications Manager; and
- Work with the Climate and Energy Project Director to develop and implement a fundraising plan.
Requirements and Special Knowledge
The position requires a college degree (BA/BS) or equivalent, a demonstrated commitment to the environment, an appreciation of Friends of the Earth’s role in the environmental movement and knowledge of climate change policy. Experience in policy advocacy, particularly on fuels or agricultural issues, at the federal or state level is strongly preferred. Knowledge and experience with the legislative process is preferred.
The ideal candidate will have a strategic approach to both policy and politics, and a desire to have a major impact on federal policy debates through hard-hitting advocacy. The successful candidate will have the ability to balance and successfully complete a wide range of campaign activities including advocacy, convening/organizing, policy development, and research, as well as the ability to oversee consultants, and coordinate media and development staff. The successful candidate will have the ability to work in coordination with a dedicated and passionate team of climate team staff as well as with a diverse group of coalition partners. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
