Directory Entry : Trust for Nature is a not-for-profit organisation that works to protect native plants and wildlife in cooperation with private landowners. Our native plants and wildlife provide us with not only important services, such as clean water and resources, but they are important in and of themselves. However, as two-thirds of Victoria is privately owned, many of these species and their habitats are not currently getting the necessary protection.

Description

Trust for Nature is a not-for-profit organisation that works collaboratively to protect nature on private land forever. We have protected about 100,000 ha across both covenants and our conservation reserves, as well as managing 44 reserves and operating a Revolving Fund for conservation property purchases. We have since evolved into one of Victoria’s primary land conservation organisations, with several tools to help people protect biodiversity on private land.

The role

Trust for Nature is seeking a part time, fixed term Biodiversity Offsets Officer based in Melbourne. A biodiversity offset is an agreement where a landowner undertakes to protect and improve the quality of native vegetation on their land to balance the approved removal of habitat elsewhere.

The Biodiversity Offsets Officer has responsibility for the coordination and preparation of the documentation necessary to take a biodiversity offset through an established process to register an offset covenant on the title of land on which the offset is being secured.

The role requires experience in the project management and administration of a number of small scale projects simultaneously. This should be coupled with well-developed communication and negotiation skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines as well as IT knowledge and experience (MS Office suite).

Desirable would be an understanding of conservation and biodiversity principles, contractual concepts, legal documentation and knowledge of Victorian and Australian Government planning and biodiversity offset regulations.

The position is a fixed term, part time (0.6 FTE) contract from August 2019 to July 2020. The base full time salary is $68,276 per annum, ($40,965.60 pro rata) plus 9.5% superannuation.
