Greenpeace Canada is seeking an experienced media professional with translation skills to fill a vacancy in our Communications Department. In this position you will be responsible for the translation of documents as well as for the revision of texts.

Location: Montreal
Reports to: Communications Coordinator
Salary: $25.47/hour (35 hours per week)

Working closely with the Communications Coordinator, your focus will be to increase the effectiveness of Greenpeace Canada’s communications in French by identifying media and public relations opportunities, elaborating creative, cutting-edge communications strategies, responding to events and providing strategic communications advice. You possess a keen understanding of environmental issues, and have experience conveying issues with complex messages and difficult terminology into clear and concise messaging that can be easily understood by the general public as well as specific target audiences. You are able and willing to act as a spokesperson when needed. We are looking for a candidate that has the capacity to be part of a team while being autonomous in delivering his/her tasks, particularly related to translations.

YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

  • The translation of documents from English to French (and vice versa) as well as reviewing submissions from other departments
  • Raising the profile of the organization amongst the French language media and public through multiple channels
  • Initiating, developing and maintaining media contacts in Quebec, handling media requests of French speaking journalists
  • Writing and distributing press releases, statements, media advisories and feature stories
  • Creating and disseminating communication materials as needed in response to stories we break or in reaction to news broken by others;
  • Developing and implementing communication strategies for specific projects
  • Staying up to date with Greenpeace campaigns and activities in order to provide knowledgeable comment when required;
  • Organising press conferences and public events
  • Handling photo and video related tasks jointly with the photo/video unit

YOU POSSESS:

  • An academic degree preferably in the field of translation, communications or journalism
  • A sound general knowledge of a wide range of environmental issues, including oceans, biodiversity, climate change and energy
  • A commitment to and an understanding of Greenpeace’s values and campaign goals
  • Professional experience of at least three years in media relations and public engagement including traditional communication tools, translation and marketing;
  • A strong understanding of local, regional and national print, radio, television and internet media;
  • A sound understanding of photography, video, design and printing
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English and French
  • Experience in working in a multi-cultural environment and multinational teams
  • Capable of dealing with unforeseen events and periods of pressure and stress
  • Flexibility to travel and work weekends and evenings when necessary;
