Greenpeace Canada is seeking an experienced media professional with online communication skills to fill a vacancy in our Communications Department.

Location: Montreal
Reports to: Communications Coordinator
Salary: $46,352 per annum
Closing date for applications: April 7, 2014

Working closely with the Communications Coordinator, your focus will be to increase the effectiveness of Greenpeace Canada’s communications and organizational profile by identifying media and public relations opportunities, defining creative, cutting-edge communications strategies for both traditional and digital media, responding to events and providing strategic communications advice.

You possess a keen understanding of environmental issues, and are used to convert complex messages and difficult wordings into clear messages understandable by the public and specific target audiences. You are able and willing to act as spokesperson when needed.

YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

  • Raising the profile of the organization amongst the media and public through multiple on- and offline channels
  • Initiating, developing and maintaining press contacts, handling media requests
  • Writing and distributing press releases, statements, media advisories and feature stories
  • Communicating Greenpeace activities on social media
  • Keeping the website up to date and writing e-mail updates to our supporters
  • Developing and implementing communication strategies for specific projects
  • Organising press conferences and public events
  • Handling photo and video related tasks together with the photo/video unit
  • Creating and disseminating communications materials as needed in response to stories we break or in reaction to news broken by others;
  • Staying up to date with Greenpeace campaigns and activities in order to provide knowledgeable comment when required;

 

YOU POSSESS:

  • An academic degree preferably in the field of communications or journalism
  • Sound general knowledge of a wide range of environmental issues, including forest conservation, climate change and energy
  • Commitment to and understanding of Greenpeace’s values and campaign goals
  • Professional experience of at least three years in media relations and public engagement including traditional communication tools, social media and marketing;
  • Strong understanding of local, regional and national print, radio, television and internet media;
  • A sound understanding of photography, video, design and printing
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English and French
  • Experience in working in a multi-cultural environment and multinational teams
  • Capable of dealing with unforeseen events and periods of pressure and stress
  • Flexibility to travel and work weekends and evenings when necessary;
