About this opportunity

The Benthic Ecologist will enhance AIMS’ capacity in benthic marine ecology in habitats dominated by filter-feeding communities. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing innovative projects to understand the structure and function of tropical filter-feeding epibenthic communities in shallow and deeper water on the NW Shelf, addressing areas such as spatial ecology, patterns and drivers of biodiversity, population dynamics, and the role of trophic processes in structuring communities.

Work will be in diverse locations predominantly in north Western Australia including, but not restricted to, Ningaloo Reef, the Pilbara and Kimberley coasts, and the oceanic reefs, banks and shoals of the Timor Sea.

Attractive working conditions apply including a commencing salary of $112,811 – $144,424 plus up to 15.4% superannuation, generous leave, relocation assistance and many other benefits.  This appointment will be for an initial term of 5 years, however this a key role in the Institutes long term strategy and may be converted to a permanent appointment following the initial term.  This position will be based at our Perth Research Facility in Western Australia.

About You

The successful applicant will hold a PhD in marine science with significant postdoctoral experience and excellent knowledge of the ecology of benthic marine ecosystems, particularly marine filter feeders.  You will be able to demonstrate the ability to work with and lead research programs in partnership with industry and government with a successful track record in securing funding from various sources.  Experience in field based studies with extensive knowledge of experimental design and statistical analysis of ecological/biological data sets and an ability and willingness to work in diverse and remote locations for periods is essential.
