Background Information
The East England Forest District is responsible for managing the Public Forest Estate in East Anglia, Kent, East Sussex and the Chilterns. The main administration centre for the District is based in Thetford.
Thames Beat, based in Upminster (Essex), is the main outstation for the management of the District's community woodland estate. The Thames Beat covers an area of 520 hectares of community woodland around the Thames Gateway and Thames Chase Community Forest to the east of London, south Essex and north Kent.
Thames Beat has a staff resource of 5 people and is supported by other key team members from the East England Forest District and national teams. The teams role is to manage and sustainably expand the existing community woodland estate which it is centred.
The Thames Beat estate consists of a number of woodlands, created near to communities over the last decade on greenfield and brownfield land. They support a range of habitats from establishing woodland, traditional orchards, wildflower meadows, as well as providing community participation opportunities.
The team specialises in seeking new and innovative methods of delivering public benefits, and has recently worked in partnership with a commercial brownfield reclamation company in the restoration of two landfill sites into community woodlands. This successful collaboration has created further opportunities that could enable the sustainable expansion of the community woodland estate over the next 10 years.
The Thames Beat is often used as an example of the work the Forestry Commission is doing to create new woodlands close to communities.
