Description

The Bat Conservation Trust (BCT) is proud to be the leading non-governmental organisation devoted solely to the conservation of bats and their habitats. Our mission is to conserve bats for present and future generations. Through education, collaborative action and scientific research, we inspire individuals and organisations to value and speak out for bats. BCT works on a range of different projects and initiatives to achieve this.

It is estimated that 80% of wildlife and habitat loss is as a result of development. This is despite the fact that Local Planning Authorities and Statutory Nature Conservation Bodies (SNCBs) place a duty on all developers to undertake mitigation for impacts on wildlife following the mitigation hierarchy (avoid, mitigate, compensate). Compensatory roosting habitat ranges from the provision of bat boxes (in trees, on buildings or integrated into new builds) through to purpose-built structures to replace bat roosts with very high conservation value.

There are currently no systematic approaches for checking compliance with mitigation measures committed to as part of the planning and licensing processes. What we currently lack at a national level is evidence of (or evidence of the lack of) implementation and monitoring of bat mitigation; evidence identifying where the current processes are succeeding or failing; and updated evidence on effective mitigation measures for bats.

We are seeking a bat worker with some knowledge and experience of roost inspection, emergence and dawn surveys to assist our Project Officer in investigating the implementation and success of bat mitigation proposed for a cross section of cases through summer fieldwork.

If you have the passion and experience to join our team and help us secure a future for bats and the habitats that support them and wider biodiversity, please view the job description and person specification and complete an application form (see below).
