Purpose and General Description:

Canada's leading land conservation organization, the Nature Conservancy of Canada, is seeking a dynamic and talented individual to strengthen land conservation in British Columbia for the benefit of current and future generations. Reporting to the Director of Land Securement and Major Policy Initiatives, the Conservation Coordinator and Analyst will focus on advising and supporting land securement projects by drafting and reviewing agreements and ensuring internal and external securement standards and procedures are met, as well as taking a key role in policy initiatives. The successful candidate will have a minimum 3 years’ experience with rural real estate transactions in BC, and drafting and/or reviewing contracts, as well as excellent communication and teamwork skills, and an ability to work in a fast-paced environment on multiple projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plays advisory and support role in all BC land securement transactions including land purchases, conservation covenants, land donations and other transactions. Works closely with Director of Land Securement and Program Managers to ensure all land securement projects meet applicable standards and deadlines.
    • Key documents drafted, reviewed and finalized for approval. Documents include purchase and sale agreements, donation agreements, conservation covenants, lease agreements, memoranda of understanding, Conservation Project Summaries, finance forms package, applications for Ecological Gifts Program, among others.
    • Acts as liaison with NCC’s legal counsel, providing instructions and coordinating conveyancing information/documentation for securement transactions and agreements.
    • Communications/liaison with key partners and service providers including appraisers, partner conservation organizations, landowners, government bodies, etc.
  • Acts as liaison with National Office to ensure regional securement reporting requirements and information needs are satisfied.
  • Drafts or reviews other property-related contracts such as land use permits and licenses.
  • Investigates and advises on obligations or liabilities arising from government statutes and regulations, both through communications with government entities and/or legal counsel.
  • Plays key role in policy analysis and initiatives, e.g. mining access on conservation lands., interface with Agricultural Land Reserve.
  • Represents NCC at partnership roundtables including securement committee of the Conservation Partners of BC and Crown Land Securement Partnership Program.
  • Management of securement and property-related information in both paper and electronic files, including oversight of regional Land Information System securement data and documents.
  • Tracks property assessment information for all properties, including review of yearly assessment notices and applications for property tax exemption as necessary.
  • Answers or coordinates securement related inquiries from general public.
  • Assists Regional Vice President and Associate Regional Vice President with special projects.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Required Skills and Attributes:

  • At least 3 years’ experience with rural real estate transactions in BC
  • At least 3 years’ experience drafting and/or reviewing contracts
  • General knowledge of key and relevant statutes in BC, e.g. Land Title Act, or experience interpreting BC statutes and regulations
  • Experience with conservation covenants
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment on multiple projects
  • Information management and time management skills
  • Excellent communication skills
