The Bayshore Project Manager works in close cooperation with the Delaware Division of Fish & Wildlife and other conservation partners in the region to refine and advance the strategic conservation goals of Bayshore Forever and the Delaware Bayshore Initiative. The Project Manager initiates and completes land conservation transactions in priority areas across the Bayshore.  S/he employs a full range of protection tools to acquire varying degrees of legal interest in land, including gift, easement, purchase, leases, conservation brokerage, and cooperative projects with partners. S/he maintains local real estate market knowledge, cultivates relationships with landowners, and coordinates landowner outreach with our partners. The Project Manager catalyzes and expands partnerships focused on restoring critical habitats across the Bayshore, leading the implementation of habitat restoration and conservation practices in priority areas. S/he develops conservation plans that identify protection and restoration priorities and address threats to Bayshore communities and their cultural heritage. The Project Manager works with other Conservancy staff, Chapter leadership, and partners to secure public and private support for conservation projects. Grant funding for this position has been secured for two years and we anticipate continuing this position beyond the grant period.

 

 
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
 
  • Plans and coordinates multiple land protection and restoration projects at once under various deadlines.
  • Negotiates real estate transactions, which can bind the Conservancy legally and financially.
  • Maintains records related to land transactions.
  • Gains cooperation from conservation partners, landowners, and other stakeholders to accomplish conservation goals.
  • Assists with public and private fundraising sufficient to meet individual project needs.
  • Ensures program compliance with internal policies and procedures, and external requirements.  
  • Performs tasks with minimal supervision and makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and judgement.
  • May recruit and supervise staff, interns, contractors, or volunteers as needed or as funding is available.        
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.

 

 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • BA/BS degree in natural resources, conservation, business, law or another related field of study and 5 years of related work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience negotiating complex agreements. 
  • Experience communicating with the public both in writing and verbally.
  • Experience with principles of land acquisition, real estate transactions, and/or habitat restoration.   
  • Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.      

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5-7 years of related work experience in conservation, natural resource management, or real estate.
  • Graduate degree in law, business, or natural resources preferred.
  • Familiarity with Delaware natural history and conservation issues.
  • Experience working with ArcGIS and SharePoint.
  • At least 3 years of experience in successfully negotiating real estate transactions.
  • Knowledge of current trends and strategies in conservation, land protection, and habitat restoration.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, directing, and managing multiple projects and timelines.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex habitat restoration projects.
  • Ability to work with and motivate diverse teams of internal and external partners.
  • Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities.
  • Ability to explain conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising and/or public and private grant writing.
  • Excellent communication skills via written, spoken and graphical means.
 
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
 

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program.  Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."  Please see further details in the Auto Safety Program document available at www.nature.org/careers. 

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
