Do you have a passion for food and want to be at the forefront of food distribution in Barnet?

Barnet Food Hub coordinates the distribution of food to Foodbanks and community groups across the borough. Set up in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, this essential service ensures Barnet based foodbanks have the ability to provide sufficient, safe and nutritious food to all those who use their services, whilst also diverting food away from the waste cycle.

Since November 2020, the Barnet Food Hub has distributed over 400 tonnes of food. It is distributed to a network of 30 plus community organisations, who are feeding approximately 4000 people per week. Any food that is not fit for human consumption is fed into our network of food waste solutions – ensuring no food ends up in landfills.  By connecting a wasteful food system with rising food poverty in Barnet, we are tackling pressing social and environmental issues.

Groundwork London is seeking a Barnet Food Hub Officer to work within a wider team to lead the day-to-day operations at the hub, including:

  • Organise surplus food deliveries and food collections from food banks
  • Monitor food stock levels to inform purchasing of ambient and fresh food
  • Collect surplus food from partner organisations and make food deliveries using the Food Hub vehicle
  • Uphold site safety and cleanliness procedures at all times, with a focus on food safety and hygiene standards
  • Lead the processing and redirection of surplus food within our network
  • Each day is fast-paced at the Hub, with emerging and changing priorities

The successful postholder will be a self-starter, be reliable and hardworking. You will be interested in food sustainability and working collaboratively to support Barnet communities. The post will work alongside and coordinate volunteers and support the Barnet Food Bank network.

This role is physically demanding and will involve regular lifting and moving goods. Full training in manual handling and use of front end loading equipment will be provided.

Please contact us if you are:

  • Passionate about surplus food distribution and working/volunteering on food or community projects
  • Experienced in practical warehouse skills, such as picking, stock rotation and stock ordering
  • Proactive with a can-do attitude and ability to work in a team
  • Good customer service skills and communication
  • Able to prioritise in a fast-paced working environment

The Barnet Food Hub is delivered by Barnet Together. Barnet Together is a collaboration between Inclusion Barnet, Volunteering Barnet and the Young Barnet Foundation. Collaboratively we provide quality training, volunteering support and provide vital resources and advice for Barnet’s community organisations. Funding to extend this service beyond September 2022 is being sought.

Please send your application form, quoting reference 979/FHO to londonjobs@groundwork.org.uk
