Are you interested in working with high school aged youth to make a difference in Baltimore city parks and green spaces?  Do you have experience in managing groups of people to accomplish a common goal? Have you worked with agency partners to identify and complete conservation service projects? If you have answered yes to any of these questions then the 2011 Baltimore Project Leader position may be for you.

Spend 4 months working with SCA in Baltimore this spring and summer as a Project Leader. Baltimore Community Crews (BCLC) are six week SCA commuting crews based in Baltimore, MD. Crews are made up of ten High School students, who are recruited from area schools to work on restoration and trail projects in local parks and urban farms, and two adult crew leaders.

Primary Responsibilities:

Manager

  • Supervise and manage 6 crew leaders
  • Actively manage project & member risk to maintain a safe work environment
  • Plan for and carry out Environmental Education & Green Job Readiness curriculum
  • Plan and Organizine weekly environmental education trips for crews

Technical Advisor

  • Work with partner agencies to set up projects for crews
  • Assist with spring community service projects
  • Supervise the skills training & safe tool use on crews
  • Manage the quality & technique of work performed
  • Promote leadership development within crew leader team

Partnership Representative

  • Manage relationship with agency partners
  • Work collaboratively with agency on program logistics
  • Ensure successful and timely completion of work project

Program Administrator

  • Assist with recruiting, interviewing and placing 30 crew members
  • Communicate with SCA staff on a regular basis
  • Complete required program reporting and documentation
  • Manage vehicles, equipment and logistics for Crews
  • Ensure compliance with all SCA Risk Management policies & procedures

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • Bachelors degree preferred
  • Experience teaching or working with urban youth in outdoor setting
  • Project Management experience
  • Proven ability to work independently and as an effective member of a team.  
  • Microsoft computer skills;
  • excellent organization, written and verbal communication skills;
  • Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards or reliable method of transportation required
  • Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards and medical screening
  • Possess current CPR and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain
  • Must attend SCA Crew Leader Orientation Training; willingness to travel
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs
  • Hike and work in a variety of weather conditions

Program Dates: 16 week position starting in April.  Crew dates are 6/27-8/5. 
Crew Leader Training Dates: May 18-28

Compensation/Location: $625 week/16 week position.  Start date is flexible with option of working half time earlier in April and switching to full time in MAY.  Position will be based in SCA’s Arlington, VA or Baltimore, MD office in the spring.  During the summer the position will be based in Baltimore.
