Job description: 

This is a new strategic role within the Communications Team responsible for creating and implementing a robust audience development strategy and a targeted marketing strategy for more than 100 annual printed and digital materials. The postholder will champion IIED’s branding strategy within our marketing and publications production activities and build the capacity of our staff in marketing issues. He or she will also play a key role in developing effective indicators for monitoring and evaluation. An important aspect of this role will be to carry out extensive market research, to build better quality contacts for IIED and to enable a stronger analysis and understanding of our impact.

The postholder will lead, coordinate, or work in close collaboration with colleagues in the Communications Team and other parts of the Institute, in particular staff in Research Groups who are responsible for publications’ production and dissemination, and the M&E Team. The postholder will line manage two members of the Communications Team and deputise for the Head of Communications as required. The role may have the opportunity for some national and international travel and will be expected to network for the Institute and for the Communications Team.

The successful candidate will have substantial professional experience in designing, developing, coordinating and implementing strategies for marketing, publication and dissemination and branding for printed and online materials. Proven experience of customer relationship management, project and people management is also essential. Excellent communication, interpersonal, networking and diplomatic skills are required. A sound understanding of the international issues involved in environment and development is also necessary.

The IIED Communications Team is a busy and friendly team of ten who provide a service to all parts of IIED and act as a critical resource and a centre of expertise. The Team seeks to achieve the following three objectives:

  1. Ensure IIED’s work is accessible through clear content, good design and wide dissemination
  2. Target main audiences worldwide with relevant materials to stimulate policy change through our research
  3. Collaborate with people inside and outside IIED to build better strategies for research communication.
