The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL), a non-profit public interest international environmental law firm with offices in Washington, D.C. and Geneva, Switzerland, is seeking an Attorney for our Washington, D.C. office. The Attorney will join a team of lawyers and staff, including well-known experts in critical areas of international law, who are dedicated to using principles of ecology and justice to strengthen international environmental law, protect the global environment, and promote environmental justice and sustainable development. CIEL's Chemicals Program protects health and the environment from the threat of toxic chemicals by developing effective international approaches, advocating progressive reform of U.S. federal law, and strengthening capacity in developing countries for the sound management of chemicals. CIEL's Climate Change Program strives to protect the Earth's climate system through a broad participatory process while promoting forest conservation, biodiversity protection, and human rights.

The Attorney will initially split his or her time between these two programs and will work under the supervision of the Director of each program. The Attorney may also work in other CIEL program areas from time-to-time, depending on our needs.


In particular, the Attorney will be responsible for:
  • Participating in the development of CIEL strategies, objectives, and activities in the respective program areas;

  • Providing advice and support to, and collaborating with, non-governmental organizations, governmental ministries and missions (especially from the Global South), and intergovernmental organizations to achieve CIEL program goals;

  • Advocating CIEL positions and policies; and

  • Assisting in fundraising efforts.


The successful applicant should have:

  • A minimum of a juris doctor (JD) or equivalent legal qualification;

  • Expertise in international law and institutions;

  • Experience in international law of climate change (including forests) or chemicals, or both;

  • Superb communication skills in spoken and written English, including the ability to render clear, concise, and persuasive legal advice and analysis;

  • Fluency in an additional, second language (particularly Spanish) is preferred;

  • Experience working in, or with partners (particularly indigenous peoples) from, the Global South; and

  • Exceptional leadership and advocacy skills, the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues and stakeholders, and a demonstrated commitment to the public interest.

Salary will be commensurate with experience, and includes an excellent benefits package. Entry into service will be as soon as possible.
