Climate Processes & Change

Research Scientist

Non-ongoing

Salary: $74,729 - $104,657 pa

Duties: To undertake active research investigating the role of gravity waves in atmospheric momentum transport and their optimal representation in climate models.  The research will make an important contribution to the work of the Climate Processes and Change Program of the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) and that program’s contribution to the Australian Antarctic Science Strategic Plan. The position will implement a gravity-wave ray-tracing capability. This will make it possible to link various observations to gravity-wave source regions and mechanisms, to infer the relative contributions of sub-classes of gravity waves to the momentum budget of the middle atmosphere and to provide a physical basis for gravity-wave parameter sets used to in numerical models. In so doing, the position will provide analytical and quantitative support to the team of Australian and international researchers who are working to improve the representation of the southern polar stratosphere in climate models and the subsequent climate predictions for southern mid-latitudes. The position demands a productive and innovative researcher capable of initiating and driving independent research ideas as well as collaboratively supporting the work of others.

Applications together with the Application Cover Sheet and a current Curriculum Vitae should be forwarded via email to recruitment@aad.gov.au. You should ensure that you provide sufficient information relevant to the advertised Selection Criteria.
